Has anyone tried to grow Iris from seed?

I thought I'd give them a try recently in my electric propogator, they've been in there a fortnight now with nothing showing, any ideas please?

Sheal, they need stratifying. Put them in the freezer for a couple of days, then start them off in a heated propagator.:dbgrtmb:

I haven't seen hide nor hair of my mini ones for a couple of years so was quite shocked today when we went to our apartment by the sea to see mini Iris up and blooming ... everything seems odd here at the moment ... :love30:

We have wild white Iris here which seeds itself all over the place on the roadsides in the Spring and sometimes the purple ones ... quite spectacular. The mini purple ones are wild also.

Oh blast! I only had about a dozen and put them all down, I'll have to wait until next year now for more seed to put in the freezer.

Thanks for the info Dai.

Sheal, have they all rotted or are they still viable?

That won't take long Armandii, I could try counting the sheets instead! :heehee:

Meanwhile I'll give the seeds another week or so and see if any sprout.

I don't know Dai, I'll check in the morning.

Are you thinking about them being retrievable and trying the freezer?

They are the dwarf one's by the way.

I say dwarf, meaning they grow to about a foot high.

Mine are spring and summer flowering, didn't know you could get winter flowering one's Dai.

That's interesting. Perhaps it's down to different climate or soil may be, mine is sandy, I'm on the west coast here. :)
