    Hello Everyone,

I know that general guidance on roses planting is early spring, but this year, 2013, spring has just arrived. I have prepared the soil early March, but was waiting for cold weather to end. I then had to travel and will only be able to start from next week-end (3th May). Do you think it is too late to plant the roses?

Also would you share the websites you order the roses from?

    Thanks,
    D

    Hi Dinara,

If they are bare root roses (not in a pot) they should have been planted between November and March. If they are in a pot they can be planted all year round. Don't forget to feed and water them as they are hungry and thirsty plants. :)

Sheal's spot on with her advice, [as usual:snork:], Dinara. Bare root roses aren't available for retail until late Autumn until Spring. Roses in pots can be planted at any time during the year, so long as the ground isn't frozen.:snork:

I only buy barerooted so too late for you for this year, but all mine have come from Cants in Colchester.

The popular brand for potted plants is David Austin - your local garden centres will probably stock that brand. They stock a very good & popular range of varieties; good quality plants and impressive marketing. David Austin also sell bare root plants during the winter planting season. Personally I find them expensive, hence why I prefer my local stockist :) helped by the face that Cants have excellent quality plants.

I agree, Kristen, there are quite a few commercial rose growers around Cheshire and when I have the need to buy roses I usually by from them.:snork:

          :sofa:;)
Hi Dinara some very sound advice from our friends, but no its not to late to plant roses bare root if you can still get them,I plant roses at any time, and have planted and moved roses in July with no problem,November to march as Sheal as said is the general rule but I just think that rules are meant to guide you and not to bind you, only my personal opinion of course:)

I have bought from both Cants of Colchester and Style roses, both recommendations from Kristen and Armandii and pleased with what I received. :)

Welcome to GC :sign0016: (haven't "seen" you, before now :) )

If we ignore any "generalisations", may I ask, which type of roses are you asking about?
Do you have any specific type in mind?
Have you bought them bare rooted, or in a pot?
What type of soil will they be planted in?
Which 'aspect' will they be planted in?

I do appreciate that is a lot of questions, but, it can make the difference to the generic question: " Is it too late ... " vs a more specific guideline. (I say this from someone who had a) no knowledge of roses, b) no knowledge of planting times and c) no knowledge of GC forums, who, "transplanted" a stem/root of rose at the absolutely WRONG time of year, yet still had a positive result :) Had I been familiar with GC, I would have sought their worldly wisdom. As it transpires, my instincts/luck were enough  but it could have gone horribly wrong!
