Its Never Only a Rose 2016

Thanks Sheal for that, I just gave it some blood, bone and wotsit worked in slightly around the base. Should I feed it more do you think?

Now you mention 'climber' I do wonder if it is the nature of that rose. Did a bit more research on it online and there are mentions of it being used as a shrub type but also more so as a climber as well as some mentions of it being 'difficult' and 'spindly', while others find it 'sturdy' . Though I'm wondering if i am just looking for excuses for my poor care of it.

I shall let it do its thing this year and if it doesn't look right may move it in the winter to somewhere that might suit something with a climbing habit. I don't really like things flopping in the borders.

I did have a better all=round look at it and it does seem there are quite a few of the stems that look unlikely to support even a small cluster of opened blooms and remain upright. At least I can bring them into the house.

It depends on when you fed it @Gay Gardener and what type of soil you have. I have sandy soil that doesn't hold nutrients, so I feed my roses three times during the growing season and mulch with home produced compost at the beginning and end of season too. If you have a reasonable soil then I would say feeding when it starts to leaf up and then about halfway through the growing season should be enough.

I use chicken manure pellets at the start of the season. I would prefer horse manure but I can't handle the weight of that now so the pellets come as a good second to that.

 

Ah ok @Sheal I shall get onto a better feeding programme though I'm not convinced of its long-term existence in the spot its in.

Looking to the future could anyone recommend a very sturdy upright rose that is little trouble and white preferably with small blooms. 6 feet height absolute tops would be good. Thanks.
