Strongylodon, I am in Algarve and our temp doesn't go much below 10oC in the winter except perhaps on the odd day or two.

They do grow outside here and the Portuguese call them Acacia Vermelha,

PS Read about Delonix regia at www.tropilab.com for hardiness and culture. I'm in USDA zone 9.

LoL Are you going to try one? have you got room for one? Perhaps I should move somewhere warmer, and grow the plants I like outside, my brother has (Crete). They had snow in there two out of the last three winters so I don't think Delonix would grow there, I'll find out when I go there in october. [IMG]

Sadly, strongy, I haven't got room for one or believe me there would be one! Moving somewhere warmer does mean you can have all the tropical / sub-tropical plants you've always loved. I've resorted to things in big pots ... I'm currently nuturuing two Lychees started from pips at Christmas. I have a giant angel-wing Begonia I've had for donkeys years growing outside here for four years ... in a protected corner of the garden.

Lisbon had snow this past winter for the first time in 53 years ... some people didn't know what it was! The highest point in Algarve, Foia (about 900m) and a few other high spots had a smattering also ... but then that will be talked about for the next umpteen years. Here in the orange orchards we had a slight frost on the windscreen at 3oC a couple of times but quickly went as the day went into the teens.
