Jatropha podagrica (Buddha Belly Plant)

I did these from seed in May 2019 so delighted to see it's first bloom emerging ...

I used to grow these, strange plants, but satisfying when you get flowers.

 

I agree Pete, I did it for the novelty.

 

Next you need to get it to set seed.

I think there are male and female flowers in the same bunch, if I remember correctly.

 

I've just Googled it, strangely captivating!!

Well, they are tiny strange blooms on a tall stem.

 

Certainly different but very pretty Vicky. Is it single stemmed or are there more waiting their turn?

 

Yes, I thought so too Upsy., rather unique. It only has the one flower stem but all those "nubs" will become blooms. I will keep posted on this. I know the trunk gets fatter and stores water.

I just had to look back to when I was growing these, as you know I tend to have spells when I grow different things and then something else catches my attention.

Anyway it was 2007 believe it or not.

I seem to remember getting seed as well, but I think you need to hand pollenate.

The seed is very similar to a castor oil plant seed but without the marbling if I remember correctly.

You now need to wait until the capsule splits, I think there could possibly be 3 seeds in there.
