    Hi folks.

    I have just got back into circulation after a bit of a bad year.
    Last year I bought some nice roses from Austins, and for a few weeks I kept them healthy, in readiness for planting out. Unfortunately I was beset by a couple of 'mini strokes, and I had to stop gardening. All I could do was ask my son and daughter to feed and water them. They did their best and wondrously the roses survived; just about, but one or two of them have very shrivelled leaves. The stems are fine and seem to be alive, but the leaves haven't responded to water.

    I will definitely have to put them in fresh compost, but should I cut back all the shoots with shrivelled leaves, or should I just remove the leaves? Or should I buy some new roses?

    I have removed all leaves that seemed to be affected by black spot. (Peace has survived well and it's a fine looking bush, despite the dry weather we've had here. (Although April finally seems to have arrived!)

    I will replace them if necessary, but I will stand over Number One Son, and supervise planting out! :old:

    All advice gratefully received.

    Thanks in anticipation.

    Wobbly (John)

        Good morning @Wobblycogs (John) sorry to hear that,just you take care of yourself my friend,its difficult to advise with out a photo of the roses,but as I cannot see them,I would respectfully suggest just removing the affected leaves for now, Roses are a lot tougher and more resilient than a lot of people give them credit for;):smile:

        If you can get a photo for us that would be most helpful and appreciated my friend and then we will be able to see just where the shrivelled leaf shoots are:smile:

        If you need any more advice and help please just ask anytime:smile:

          Welcome back @Wobblycogs ! I agree that most perennials are a lot tougher than we are led to believe. :)

                  John. You are amongst friends here. I am so sorry to learn of your health problems. I myself am in a similar situation. We MUST push on. Sadly like you, my roses have suffered. However, the rose or shall we call her...Rosie. By gad Sir she is a strong wench to say the least. I have come face to face with some really old ladies named Rose. Really stout thick main stems, trunks. Where there's life, that's the way to go. I started young and rose through the ranks. Albeit now retired, I am a plant pathologist. Trust me. All this who-har about wiltin leaves etc. In this scenario the foliage is a form of defence, protection. Even Blackspot etc. The leaves are the plants number one protection. Alarm bells. Wilting leaves, discolouration stop worrying. You can intervene or leave it alone. With roses as long as the roots are alive, you can cut and remove unwanted growth.

                    Hi everyone;

                    A mass thank you to one and all. I amn't giving up; no sireee. I do hope to have a good year this year, but it didn't start too well. The BT people have erected a telegraph pole on my side lawn (Corner property) and they are insisting it's on public land! So that was solicitor's letter No. 1. My wife's care home manager is besetting me with threats of debt collectors, because I can't access my wife's pension account to settle her bill. The Post Office refuse to acknowledge the legal document I have as my wife's appointee. So I am getting a Court Order to put them straight.
                    All in all a sarcastic good start! :wallbanging: There's an old standard song called 'Everything Happens to Me!' Oh how appropriate!

                    Only my woodwork and the garden are keeping me sane!

                    But truly. thanks again everyone. Today I managed to remove all the Black spotted leaves, and damaged/crossed stems and swept up around the containers. followed by a heat treatment of the patio weeds with my blow torch! before they can take hold well and truly.) Discovered that white vinegar, and salt, with a dash of Fairy liquid kills weeds.) A cupful of each in a full can of water and sprinkle the drive!

                    Best to all

                    John :yay::old:
