One would think so Waco, but it doesn't always happen.

You just wouldn't believe how little some chidren have been taught by their parents. Even simple things like how to hold a knife and fork are having to be taught in school but that sort of teaching doesn't figure when inspectors tot up the scores for SATs.

Mrs Pal is a Child Minder and the Kiddies we have here are not bad..they just have no structure and no positive examples to build on,their parents only control is through bribery.
We have a constant battle with the babes to instruct them on the most basic of manners.
Poor or rich...there is a missing generation from the 80/90's which seems to have lost the ability to guide with love and understanding.
In our environment the meak often win..And the strong help them!

I sometimes have to teach flute/clarinet in school dining halls after lunch. The job the caretaker hasto do to clean up after the event is both disgusting, demeaning appart from being totaly revolting!

If we did not use correct table manners at school we were sent out of the dining room and starved! Soon taught us.

[IMG] Here, here Paladin. I totally agree with you. It is frightening really to think this is so widespread...
[IMG] I take great pride in my grandchildren... [IMG] They are brought up on very traditional values & standards & their manners & knowledge are a pleasure to see. They know exactly when they have overstepped the mark. I also cringe at some things they do or say.. Looking at some of their school friends though & you see this confused, uncaring & unfeeling child who is struggling with life that he knows nothing about , & is being given no help or guidence from the parents. I have been absolutely gob smacked to hear the parents remarking on how "they think teachers should teach difference between right & wrong & manners" "... :D When little Johnny has been in trouble & they were also called in... Of course it is never little Johnny who is in the wrong.... !!!
What is this world coming too..??

[IMG] Oh I did my fair share misbehavin', don't get me wrong....!!!! But you were taught right & wrong by your parents as well... Whether you chose to heed it was down to you as is today... It's just that allot of todays kids do not have academically stimulating homelives, Their "life skills" tend to be lacking because of this & therefore end up going down the "wrong road" so to speak.. :(
Btw we had straw boaters in the summer too...

Couldn't agree more - having had to mind my manners around adults all my young life I now find myself being pushed and shoved around by the youth today and can't help wondering "When is it my turn?"!

Further to that, on my way into work the other day (I use an entrance near the maternity department) this young couple were going in the door - one of those heavy fire doors with a push bar. Then the young lass came back and pulled open the door again and held it open while I approached and entered. 'Nice' you might think - yes, it was, except she was quite pregnant, had a IV cannula in her hand and fairly obviously looked unwell and pale. When I got inside, I found her partner standing by while she held the door for me!! Then we went up in the lift together and on the next floor there was another pair of fire doors so I held the door open for her, expecting (ha!) her boyfriend would take it off me so she could proceed as he was closest. Did he? Like heck! She took the door off me and held it open while he walked around her and through the door!!

;) I was sent this the other day.... [IMG]

These are for the most part things they will not learn in school. Feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality. They have been set up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2: The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3: You will NOT make £60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a fancy car and a mobile phone until you earn both.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes; learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parents generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you need to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds; chances are you'll end up working for one.

These are for the most part things they will not learn in school. Feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality. They have been set up for failure in the real world.

[IMG] That is so true Marley- think I will give a copy to my grand-daughter. She is really a lovely girl but I think a prod in the right direction might do her a bit of good as she thinks rule 3 applies to her!

It is sad that one has to attend a "knight school" instead of just an ordinary school, in order to have a kind and considerate behaviour.
