Hi, does anyone grow kolkwitzia (think it's Linnaea now)? I did a search but there aren't any threads on here beyond a possible I'd. I was wondering if it was because people just didn't like it, didn't know about it, or knew better.
I've heard a couple of people say they think it's the best shrub there is but it seems quite lacking in our gardens and I was wondering why.

I don't have any experience with them, but I do recall from another forum (now closed) that the main negatives about the plant that others reported is that it only flowers for around 3-4 weeks, it grows very quickly and can be hard to maintain as it only flowers on old wood so can quickly become very lanky and look a bit of a mess.

I hadn’t heard of it so looked it up. Burncoose Nurseries seems to like it, but they have good growing conditions and lots of space which it seems to need:

Abelia has similar flowers and may be a better option.

Thanks Pete, size is the one thing that I had considered problematic. The one i saw where it was recommended was almost small tree size and given it arches out thats quite a chunk of real estate. I know it's short flowering but I didn't think that was really much different to deutzia or philadelphus, or even rambling roses, in terms of length, which is why they put may-June on the label (as in flowers during those months but nowhere near all that length).

Thanks Plantminded. It was more curiosity rather than something I plan to grow (although knowing me i'll probably succumb to temptation). I often see plants that look good but yet get no mention. I grow abelia and it's great for late season interest but kolkwitzia got my attention as it's really in competition with deutzia and philadelphus, which seem extremely popular and common, and I wondered why kolkwitzia was given the cold shoulder.
