@pete is correct - I remember it well. We used to have to a radio licence (brought in around 1923) and this changed to a combined TV and radio licence just after the war. Whoops! I was told not to mention the war  Or was that Basil Fawlty? :heehee:

I think the radio licence was discontinued in the early seventies.

People over 75 are, currently, exempt from paying the licence and it is half price if you're blind!

I always remember my old Mums stories about before the war.
One of those was about having a radio and it ran off of what they called an accumulator, a kind of battery.
You had to get then serviced in some way, presumably charged up.
She said they wouldn't let you on a bus with one, so you had to walk all the way there and back with it.
        This was in London.

We used to make our own radios with a 'cat's whisker' - known as crystal sets. :blue thumb:

The accumulator batteries looked a bit like a vertical car battery and you could get them at different voltages. The lower voltages only retained a charge for about a week. You could get them charged at a garage.

The a/c in the kitchen just went kaput! Fortunately I had just finished cooking the mince for tacos tonight. Luckily we eat light in the Summer so not a lot of cooking goes on, plus we eat out once a week and get take aways once or twice a week, a roast chicken from the grocery store deli and/or fresh home-made from our local bar/restaurant.

T'other Half will contact our a/c man about replacement. They are all heat / air but to go out in the Summer. We don't really have a Winter but also have a wood burner in the lounge and as we have open arches everywhere it heats all. We have them in both bedrooms. lounge, kitchen and outdoor living room (only a/c there)..

There are somewhere around 7,000 licences still issued for black and white TV's and the authority never checks them. :rolleyespink:

You can still buy secondhand ones  They cost about the same price as the difference between the two licences :)

Following on from the a/c problems in the kitchen the other day, which T'other Half fixed himself (saving us approximately 1,700 Euros for an upgraded model and installation), the light over the cooker blew, Sky TV lost sound, MEO TV disappeared and my Notebook (mini laptop) lost its mojo! T'other Half has now remedied the latter three and just has to do the cooker light ... up in the hood vent so awkward ...

TV LICENCE? I seem to remember that... Out here in Ireland we of pension age or on benefits automatically get one free.. And as I don't have a TV..... NB they still give me a licence...One less bit paperwork to worry about..
