Since "Dale" means valley, Borrowdale Valley is a tautology.
As is Lake Windermere, and it´s a mere not a lake.
Scafell Pike is an assembly of three languages, scar meaning hill, fell, meaning, er hill, and pike - yes, you get the idea.

Years ago I made two large iron benches for the Cumbrian Slate Quarry, and to my surprise the charming director asked if she could possibly pay me in advance ! It was just before Christmas, and she saved my skin.

@Giri I guess that is likely to have been Jan at Honister Slate Mine. It was very sad about Mark.

Same here .. from Wiki Simple English ... The name Algarve comes from Gharb Al-Andalus (Arabic: غرب الأندلس‎, gharb al-ʼandalus; "The West of Al-Andalus"), or just Al-Gharb (Arabic: الغرب‎, al-gharb; "The West"), the name given by the Muslims of Iberia to the region to the west of Andalusia.

So people who say The Algave are saying The The West.

This piece of slate from the Honister slate mine has a special place in my garden.

Can someone explain why a person has to park across my driveway when there is hardy any cars in the road, the offending idiot could have just reversed 5 ft and my driveway would be clear.

I'm not about to take my car out today now, but if I was I couldn't. Haven't a clue who it is or where they have gone.

A friend of mine has A5 self adhesive notices saying "Please be more considerate when parking" and sticks it to the centre of the offending back window. :blue thumb:

Good idea, I was thinking of going out with a black marker pen and hatching off the offending area of the car.

Some people stick them on the windscreen but I think that only gets them more angry - they're difficult to get off. :)

I just read a headline about the Wembly thugs who are wanted by the coppers. I was looking closely at the pictures of these fellows to statstically come to a conclusuion about what type of people do these terrible things. Only 1 of the ten is bald... Why do guys with hair become so angry? :heehee:

Statistically speaking, thugs generally belong to the section of society with more than the average number of legs. It´s a dead giveaway.
