I can see the green but before it was cut it appeared to just be a solid mass of ripe wheat. I don't know whether it's common to have weeds growing amongst it :noidea:

As it's looks like the crop is about 2 foot tall and going through that axilflow combine it shouldn't need the straw chopper on the back of combine working as them axilflow combine's smash the straw like lawn mower clippings any way

With all that green stuff it may be feed wheat unless there is a bad year for milling wheat and the quality levels are lower then it may go for biscuit flour

For milling wheat it will have to be clean as pos. your only aloud 2% add mix of combinable crops in the load of grain, the add mix is only from combining and not from farmer adding things in to the grain :th scifD36:;) ie sand to make up weight as it's hard to find in a sample at the mill's ;)

      Edit
If the quality is very good for milling then it may pay to clean the grain but if you don't have the plant to do it then cost's will be more, extre haulage paying some one to do it a the weight lost of the grain as some grain and weed seeds with be taken out as waste

Well at least it wasn't treated with glyphosate before cutting.

I just wondered if it was all going to be ploughed in, it really doesn't look like a ripe field of wheat to me, more like its rotting.

I don't know what they will do but I think I heard them start some machinery on the field about 5 a.m. I'll wander down there later. At least I shall be able to light my bonfire if the wind is in the right direction. :) According to the weather chart it appears to be in the right direction but looking out the window it seems too windy for me to be able to control it. Forecast says moderate breeze but looks more than that. So may have to wait a bit.

If you mean about the black-ish colour of the wheat than will be because of the damp/wet weather we have had, it may even affect the quailty a bit, i've see worse!!!!!

Yes, to me it looks the wrong colour, I wondering if they had actually given up on it, hence the weeds.
I was looking at some fields around here and it doesn't look anywhere near ready yet.
Presumably because of the terrible summer.

Could it be, the crop was grown for energy?

If it was to be sold for power stations they wouldn't have chopped up the straw, they would just combine it normally and bale it afterwards.

It just looks a poorly grown wheat crop to me, the combine will remove most of the weeds but will hardly cover the farmers costs, as Jiffy says it only looks like animal feed quality.

It's short because likely to have been sprayed with a hormone growth inhibitor which makes the plants put energy into the seed heads rather than the stems (straw). Also modern wheat varieties are bred to be shorter and stiffer, avoids problems in rainy years with the crops laying and being difficult to combine.

If it was to be for fuel (petol)then it would have to be nearly the same quialty as milling wheat, a few year back the price for milling wheat was low, so fuel crop's then were paying more but you had to sign a contract for (i think it was) 5 years then the price of milling wheat went very high and lots of farmers were moaning like hell because they sign up for 5 years

Did you do click and collect, usually that sorts out if something is in stock or not as you get an e mail confirming that it is waiting for you to collect it.
