These days there are electronic displays on the luggage racks with the same information and green/red lights indicating availability.
I think in the whole carriage the majority of booked seats were unoccupied.

Our supermarket milk lasts well past the use by date but we do keep our fridge pretty cold. I have to sour it with lemon juice if I want to use it for cooking.

Sounds like you need an x Ray before physio, I'm no medic but you might as well use you tube if we are going down this route regarding treatment.
All you will get is a bunch of standard knee exercises to do.

        Lots of possibilities.

If you buy an Advance ticket you get a reserved seat and the ticket is only valid for that train although in my experience they don't force you to sit in the seat that's reserved, so people might take themselves off to somewhere nearer the buffet, the luggage rack, the quiet coach, or to sit with a friend whose seat is somewhere else in the train, or to nab a window seat, table seat etc.

If you buy an open/flexible ticket, you can book a seat on a particular train but the ticket is still valid on other trains so people with those might not use their reserved seat if they have a delay or last-minute change of plans.

If you choose not to travel at all or to change to another date/time I think you can (there's an admin charge), but if you do it after the train has set off from its starting point (which for me could be 3 hours or more earlier if it's one that started in Scotland) they'll have already put the seat reservations in. Maybe even earlier for the electronic system. And I suppose some people just don't turn up/miss their booked train without letting the train operator know.

Sometimes upgrades to first-class can be got for relatively little money at short-ish notice. If that happens I suspect they don't cancel your standard-class seat reservation.

A lot of moaning this morning - I'm still on the milk thread. My doc said I needed more calcium, but less cholesterol. So I discovered ARLA B.O.B skimmed milk 2L, which keeps for 7 days after opening. It tastes perfectly fine for drinking and cereal. I recommend it. It is not watery at all.

When we had Advance tickets the sign above the seats said available and someone was sat in them. It wasn't very nice having to turf them out - it was all very amicable, but the signs were incorrect.

Yes you are right about the difficulties in taxing multiple bike owning households - a logistical nightmare. I was really only thinking of the adult cyclists who use the roads every day - whether commuting or exercising.
Perhaps it's just as well that I have decided not to stand for PM this year - bad enough trying to work out what plants are worth growing

2 Moans - both relating to vehicle drivers.........those who park and sit quite happily with their engines running and pumping out nosie and exhaust fumes for others to enjoy - domestic and commercial are as bad as each other.
Those drivers who believe that the noisier they can make their vehicle , the "cooler" they are.

If they were 'hot' , they wouldn't need a noisy car.

Noisy car or bike screams I'm not getting any. The reason is open to speculation on the part of the listener ( hearer? listener implies a voluntary action but I don't think hearer is a word. Suggestions appreciated.)

If you can, get Cravendale - it has a really long life and does the job just fine.
