Thank you, although I am not sure I can take credit for it working again - in truth, I think that lies more with the host company than me.

I would suggest it is not a very good idea to use a propriety ISP email as your main (or any other really) account. You will pay through the nose for an ISP unless changed on a regular basis (something the government should stop) as they will hike you your rate every year. I went over to Virgin just recently as they have just set up overhead cables to our small close and I'm paying less for more than x10 faster speed. The trouble is people don't really want to change their email because it has become like your home address and not that often changed for most. But many do want to change their ISP. I would bite the bullet now and change over to (dare I say it) Gmail or the like.

The system is still slow for me when clicking "new posts" and to a smaller extent opening one of those threads. From what I've seen there is a definite resource issue with either disk access or more likely database access (could be combined). I would suspect the increase in numbers of people from GW has/will impact performance and routine server side jobs probably need to be looked at in terms of frequency. The fact it clears now and then suggests this or numbers of users is the problem.

@Ladybird4 there is a setting in Gmail to access your Virgin account and pull new emails to your Gmail account, detail are here on how. I've used this for a few years now to pull all my emails to one account and then use thunderbird on the PC to access that main account.

I agree and wish I wasn't tied in. My email is a propriety one from a cable company which was before Hotmail, gmail etc. Virgin took over our cable supplier over 20 years ago and it means we don't get a great deal, even though I threaten to leave on renewal date every year. We have always found virgin to provide good support, probably jinxing it to say that. I do have Outlook and Gmail emails too and started to swap over so I could divorce Virgin, never finished that exercise.

I use Outlook as my email client so all my emails and calendar events are saved on a local PST file.

I'm another who is stuck with my ISP email as that email address is what was used to set up all sorts of accounts over the years. You aren't wrong about prices increasing, although I do have 75mbps connection. The thought of trying to change the e-mail address on everything is daunting to say the least. If I want to change my ISP but keep the e-mail they will charge me £10 per month. I'm not sure if that is per address or for the 'master' and all associated addresses.

I am gradually changing email address over to my gmail one as and when I log in to accounts. I have come across a few sites where the email address seems to be the key identifier and can't be changed (other than by setting up a new account) but for most it's quite easy. Any that I forget about clearly don't matter too much!
OH periodically looks at changing our ISP but hasn't done it yet. He doesn't go for cheapest but what he considers to be best value for money (it's been Zen for a long while now).

I joined Virgin this year after swapping between Sky and TalkTalk for over 10 years. When I left my last ISP (Sky's turn) I was paying £33/mth for BB only 36Mbps guaranteed and they provided that throughout. I now have 370Mbps guaranteed at £35/mth. I'll have a look at Virgin offers when my 18mth contract is up and attempt to persuade them to match their current best off, else I'll unfortunately have to move for 12-18mth... As for customer service, if I have to talk to any of them I know there will be bother as they are all pretty useless. Worst I've dealt with was BT with whom I signed up with but never joined due to their failure(s) before the contract even started.
I don't know how Virgin are doing it but what clinched it for me was the Sky package I add on at £20/mth cheaper than Sky/Now.
