They often throw the old saying, if you don't vote you can't complain,
My thinking is the only people who can't complain are the ones who vote for the winner.

I sometimes hear about how people fought for our right to vote. I get that. But I don't think they fought for our obligation to vote.

I get sick of hearing people getting criticised for choosing not to vote. I think if there's nobody in the running that you feel you can get behind, there's no point.

Imagine in the workplace situation. You're recruiting. Three or four people come for an interview. All of them seem really self centered and incompetent. You don't hire one of them because they're the options. Imagine that, you bring someone in and immediate they start ruining things and backstabbing their colleagues. Someone asks you why you hired them and you say, they were the least worst of those that applied.

The problem is that, someone WILL get in, whether you vote or not. THEN, would you complain?

Maybe we should go back to having the monarch make all the decisions. Or have someone like Putin in charge?
No thanks - although a monarch might be a reasonable option.

If we only permitted the men to vote, or those over 40, we'd still have a duff government.

Maybe we should try only permitting women to vote, instead @RowlandsCastle

No thanks. We'd still be in a mess - only a different one.

Indeed. Someone will get in. That's true. Doesn't mean I have to be part of it.

Personally I usually do vote. At least in the general elections and I voted in the Brexit referendum. My point is it is completely unfair to judge people who choose not to.

I won't be voting in our upcoming locals. Ours are for the regional mayor, and the police commissioner. As I see it, all the candidates are equally bad. So I'm not pledge support for any of them.

People often vote without giving it much thought. They'll vote for who they've always voted for, because that's who their parents always voted for. Others will vote for whoever is trending on social media. That's their right I guess. I like to understand what I'm voting for and if I can't get behind any of the options, it would raise questions about my integrity if I voted.

Of course you could change things. If everyone felt the same way and voted for Independents then things would change.
I agree the choices are poor, but my lot are likely to win power this year, so I can’t be too unhappy.
                IMO voting should be compulsory.

Sometimes we have to vote for the least damaging, rather than on a basis of the best (or a suitable) person.
If I don't vote, I have no right to complain.

But yes, you have the right NOT to vote. Be grateful you have that.

I have changed my allegiance over the years. I've voted Tory, Labour, Lib-Dem, Green, and others - sometimes to elect a specific person or party, other times to try and STOP a specific person or party being elected.
I often vote nationally for a party, but locally for the individual - them being from different parties.

Compulsory voting in Australia is a better example

Unfortunately non voters are judged as apathetic by politicians on all sides. If you think there is no one worth voting for why not stand yourself?

Most people haven't got the spare several hundred pounds it costs to register, and then the several hundred more (minimum) to publicise their cause.

That's why people join a party for the main election

Council elections don't charge to stand
