We both go to the same lady a five minute drive from us, a two chair a/c tiny place. I think she charges the same for each of us 10 Euros. Even when I had a foot+ cut off ... to the style in my Avatar a few years ago.

This is a topic that I know well :heehee:. The problem with getting an 'unfussy quick cut' is that it is too minor a part of the female hairdressing trade. It shouldn't be, but it is :dunno:.

The actual scissor haircutting skills are mainly different as well but some of the skills of haircuts for men have been diminished by the promotion of very short hair cut using clippers - so not needing well trained barbers. So I have seen quite a few bad men's haircuts on hair that is not closely shorn. This leads into the next comment.

This is definitely part of it and barber shops are now being investigated by the National Crime Agency for that and for slave labour - as are some nail bars and vape shops. A large proportion of these barber shops are advertised on their shop fronts as Turkish Barbers.

This Crime Agency investigation is called Operation Machinize.

I last went to the hairdresser 47 years ago. My hair is fine and straight and I had it permed - the fashion at the time and I bought an afro comb. I remember seeing the hairdresser giving me funny looks from the back of the room. When I got home I found some hair had fallen out on top due to the perm. It took a while to grow that bit back. But the permed hair loosened and looked good.

Since then me and hubby have cut each other's hair. Well, I have first go at mine and hubby tidies it up at the back. I do hubbies while he's on the computer.

There are lots more mens barbers here too with maybe one or two customers. And a dodgy Euro mini mart has just opened with hardly any produce on the shelves. Hardly anyone in there. And nail bars.

The 'Turkish Barber' shops which have been springing up all over the place are fronts for organised crime money laundering operations. There was a programme on recently following the police on raids. One barber shop claimed to have turnover of £150k per month! That's a lot of haircuts. There's an area of our town where there must be well over a dozen in the space of half a mile, and they are in the most run down part of town. A few years ago is was takeaways in the same road that were raided and a number of people jailed for the same things.

My neighbour's dog has way more time spent on his hair-dos than the average female.

At my last hair appointment( I go every five weeks) the hairdresser advised me she was having to put up her prices( first time in years). Mine was increasing to £20 for a trim and then blown dry. Another lady in the hairdressers was just paying for her wash, cut, blow and dry…£60! Yikes. My OH pays £10 for his cut ( somewhere else). Such varying prices, makes me wonder why

I’ve cut OH’s hair for many years. Kept delaying trips to the barbers as he didn’t have time, so in desperation, I ended up doing it myself. I haven’t been to the hairdresser since Covid, and was paying about £35 for a wash, cut and blow dry. My daughter in Oxford has to pay a lot more, and sister in London even worse.
OH got plenty of practice cutting mine during Covid, (when it wasn’t such a problem if it looked a mess) but is now pretty good at it. I do the fringe and the front myself, and he does the sides and back! Looks quite professionally done! I have very thick hair (thank you, Mum) and it’s been surprising over the years, how many hairdressers struggled to cope with it. It’s lovely not to have to make appointments in advance. Also great to be able to have just a slight trim before it gets untidy, rather than having to get my moneys worth each visit by having enough cut off to last six weeks.

I've mostly cut my own hair since I was a teenager. Probably saved ££££s. It's long so it's easy to reach all the ends. On the few occasions I've had it cut at a hairdressers, it's been disappointing. They don't seem to know how to deal with hair that has different amounts of wave/curl in different areas. They all want to cut it as if it were straight and then blow dry/straighten it, which looks OK until it's washed and left to dry natural (which is what I usually do, being a bit lazy), then it looks uneven and in particular too short at the front.

After years of long, straight hair I had a Twiggy cut when I was 15 or 16 but then grew it again till I was 30 and getting married. Treated myself to an appointment at John Frieda and had it cut to shoulder length with a half fringe by Nicky Clarke. That cost £17.50 plus tips. They messed up my next appointment and I ended up at Molton Brown having a really good bob cut for £19.50.

Got lazy and grew it again then decided on a cut with highlights at a posh salon in Ealing. £70 in 1989!! I hate the whole hairdresser thing with awkward bowls, trite conversation and all the mirrors so now I get it cut every 2 years.

Costs about 40€ if I ask for a special treatment and not just conditioner. Unlike @JennyJB my hair is dead straight but that also shows up a lack of skill if the hairdresser gets it wrong when trying a fancier cut.

I do my own hair as well and have been lumbered with doing a few other people's now since lockdown. I really detest doing it tbh and I've been tempted to cock it up on purpose to get out of it.

We have plenty of those suspected money laundering establishments but the shop that gets raided the most is the one who sells illegal vapes. It has been raided a couple of times, that we know about, in the last few months but still seems to do a roaring trade in vapes. I don't know what the repercussions of selling such goods but it doesn't seem to dent their enthusiasm for trying.

I also remember when a dog was a pet the owner looked after. We have had dogs all our life and have brushed and taken care of them ourselves. I know there are lots of poodle crosses that aren't supposed to shed hair, that might need a trim but most dogs don't and the usual standard for cockapoo's here is a close scalping. So many dogs suffer in the heat because their fur is to short, a longer coat stops the sun heating up the skin and causing sun burn.

@Thevictorian Our Rasta doggy (Wheaten terrier type but breed unknown as she was a rescue) had a matted, knotted 4" thick fleece under a twirly Rastafrian top layer when we adopted her and it was impossible to wash, comb, brush and full of old Xmas tree needles and signs of flea so we ended up having her shaved. All skin, bone and tendons underneath but clearly more comfortable without it all but it was mid March so we bought her a jumper.

Once she'd gained weight and grew a healthy coat we kept her trimmed every 2 months - much easier to keep her groomed and clean after long muddy walks in Belgian countryside. She enjoyed sunbathing but also knew to flop on the tiled floors or hide under a shrub when it was hot and even learned to go pond diving after we adopted a Labrador playmate.

Agree about sun protection a,d keeping cool tho. We have a white cat with very thick fur that needs constant combing to remove knots but he has to have sunscreen on his ears from about now till mid September to prevent skin cancer.

I've only ever had dogs that take care of themselves, I often feel sorry for these strange man made breeds that need regular attention from humans.
I know some can have coats that quickly knot and have seen the affects on TV programmes .
Not that I don't give my dog a comb from time to time but it's not essential.
