@wiseowl TFT (Thanks for that). JU ( jolly useful ) I don't do texting and doubt I would ever be able to make head nor tail of them anyway.
The only ones I'd really say were in common usage in "the olden days" would be DIY, ASAP and AKA. I first heard of ROFLOL when holding email conversations with a Canadian friend in the early 90's but I did have to have it explained in full.

Was LMAO on the list? ( laughing my ‘backside’ off)
I’m not keen on the abbreviations in threads or everyday stuff, but I did start using OH for other half, in my case , a husband. I think it’s sufficiently vague to imply a significant other, without a poster having to reveal more than they are inclined to, with regard to marital status or gender etc.
Did use a lot of abbreviation when I was working, especially as there was so little space on the NHS dental cards. DNA for did not attend ( although ANK for appointment not kept was also in use)
Also the infamous NFX for Normal for X, where X = a notorious local town! ) I think that one is now discontinued because of potential litigation!

It's like a modern day shorthand @wiseowl and I can't understand most of it either. In fact I struggled to learn proper shorthand back in the dark ages. :)

Re my conundrum of how to find the beginning of a ball of twine. I ended up just cutting a strand on the outside which then became a short piece of string beford has working ok since then.
I made a wooden spindle, glued both ends of a long length of ribbon but forgot to insert the ball of twine before doing that. Swore loudly, cut the ribbon, threaded the twine on, tied another piece of ribbon to the cut ends and triumphantly placed it around my neck! Job done.

Then it occurred to me that I could have just threaded the ribbon through the ball of twine.

Thankfully don't see the abbreviations much on here. On other sites I didn't have a clue what things like DD, DS, DH meant. First 'D' is 'Dear' followed by daughter, son, husband etc. I generally give up on any topic I find littered with abbreviations.
