The local supermarket had hidden the Marmite again this morning, it was down with the Chocolate spreads, the jams and the jellies. Honestly we all know Marmite is a savoury.

I see the Orange One is at it again with tariffs. He must have squeezed all he could from the previous share crash and bounce, so he needs to hit the markets again. 50% on EU and on Apple.

))(&^%##%^&%%,"' I'll translate it fir @shiney . Arghhhhhhh! Windows is dropping publisher. I had created a lot of document templates in that format. They have to be saved as a Pdf then imported to word to try to save the formatting and graphics. I tried a couple so far and no, they do not translate well at all. You'd think they'd provide a transition facility before dumping the program!

        Arghhhhh :yikes:

@CanadianLori you are making the mistake of thinking the Micro$oft actually gives a damn about people who purchase and use their products.

@CanadianLori Can't help with Publisher formats and saving them but Possum recommends Canva as a good, free alternative for future use. I need to to design occasional posters for the patchwork etc club so will be giving it a whirl.

I watch the news every morning and hardly a day goes by without hearing some one calling for something new to be added to the school curriculum.

Usually it's just a matter of common sense.

If they all get their way there wouldn't be any proper learning going on.

Back in my day, some of the things they taught us in secondary school were of no use whatsoever in later life. Some of the more useless things, in no particular order, were learning the order of the books of the old and new testament off by heart. (No, I can’t recite them), knowing how a blast furnace works, knowing why and for how long the war of the roses happened, being able to speak with confidence about the composition of the Australian land mass, and supposedly mastering the French language when not a soul in the school had ever gone further than Bridlington and Blackpool. Useful lessons? How to sew on a button and how to cook a meal, but they were only for the lower grades such as mine; the top classes did Latin instead. Do you like my use of the semi colon? Classes I wish they had offered? Basic accounting and economics and how to open a bank account and what to do when someone falls over and is unconscious.

We had first aid lessons at school and I've got a badge. We had to practise on each other. It was quite hands on physically.

We had no sex education apart from fertilised chicken eggs, which we had to disect whilst still alive.

But we had good discipline and I never remember any disorder. It just would not happen.

We had sewing and cooking at Grammar School. Going to Grammar school helped me as it pushed me a bit and the other kids were like minded. I had to have an interview to get into the Grammar School as the 11 Plus had been abolished. I still remember that interview. It wasn't very difficult. Not sure I'd like modern day schools.

Ooh yes, we had discipline. If one naughty beggar did something and the class refused to let on who did it, the whole class was put in an hour’s detention that afternoon. Which meant that I missed the hourly bus that went from the school to my village. Which meant that when I got off the later bus it was to find my mother standing in the street wringing her hands in worry and giving me a clip over the ear when she heard why I’d missed the first one. Oh yes, discipline.

If we were naughty we had to do "lines". A hour of it.

I passed the 11-plus and went to Grammar school. Nothing that I learned there has been beneficial to me in later life :roflol:. Amongst other totally boring subjects I did French to A-level, fully aware that I had no inclination to go to France, so that was a total waste of time!

Another Grammar school kid here. Latin and Religious Education along with Chemistry were of no interest or use then, and have been of no interest or use since. I have come to understand the meaning of the Latin names of plants but that has come since, and isn't connected with learning Latin at school. Maths, English and Geography I loved at school and have been of use. I've been to France a few times so a smattering of French was useful.

I was reasonably good at maths, which came in handy when I started work, basic English, some history and geography.

Woodwork and metal work, art classes were always the time to do the maths homework, save me wasting my valuable home time doing what I wanted to do and not what someone said I had to.

But we never had any of the ,what I call, silly subjects, they come up with these days.

Maybe they should just have a common sense class once a week, it seems to be lacking.

I always get fed up with some youngster on a quiz programme and their excuse is,it was before my time, lots of things I know about were before my time, it's called general knowledge.
