Spotted in the woods this morning.
Two disposable barbecues and one open fire, lots of beer bottles and general rubbish scattered around.

I was under the impression that some controlled burning is still carried out in places ? Too late and not enough perhaps ?
Always going to be a problem when there are such uncaring idiots running loose. Time to spit roast some of them ( wouldn't vouch for the flavour tho )

Yes, controlled burns are the way to go. We have them regularly in my town. They post signs all around to let you know not to be alarmed.

It seems that these kind of burns aren't done enough or properly where it really counts, out west where prairie fires and forest fires would quickly become an inferno.

Am I right in thinking that a lot of those places are just too vast to consider "managing" the areas, natural forest growth etc.

Everything over here seems to get "managed" to the enth degree, nothing is truly wild.

We had two fires nearby this week. They were both likely started by the same idiots because they were within walking distance of each other and minutes apart. The first took out a 200x200m section of woodland and I'm not sure the other, so relatively small in fire terms but a massive amount for small local wood patches in a city.

That's really sad @Thevictorian , re the wasp nest/allotmenteers. You did a really great thing by moving it. The nests are stunning aren't they? I accidentally disturbed a bees nest once, when sorting out a raised bed for my Dad. I stopped what I was doing as soon as bees started appearing out of the ground, and replaced the soil etc that I'd moved, but it was too late. I was really upset about it. These things happen though, and I think -hope - I've made up for it since by helping wasps/bees wherever possible so that they can safely nest in my gardens.

That is really depressing @pete. The rise in people staying locally for holidays [certainly up here] has also contributed to the rise in littering and fires. They have no understanding of what's appropriate - in any way, and perhaps they simply don't care. 'someone else's job' to clear up their mess. :frown:
I agree with @Thevictorian comment about climate change creating the conditions that make fires easier to get out of control. The ones up here in the west in spring are a classic example. We're the 'wet side', so long dry spells in spring are unheard of, but this year has been unbelievable. The devastation was heartbreaking.

@fairygirl I eagerly watched as the wasps made their nest and was fascinated by the whole process. We had really heavy rain last year and the spot I chose wasn't perhaps the best, so I built a cover to keep the rain off (their choice of site wouldn't have been any better). I'm surprised allotment keepers don't know the value of a wasp but then many still spray everything good or bad.
I've got the nest as I want to do something with it at some point but it amazed me that no one noticed it when it was on my plot, as it was literally a metre from the path, albeit covered in runner beans. I guess that shows how benign they are when not being messed with. I could put my face right up to it and they didn't care, they only came out when I picked the beans but again if I let them settle for a few moments they returned and all was fine. I learnt to cut the beans off and everyone was happy.

I think wasps are more of a problem in autumn, they seem to get drunk on rotting fruit and they are coming to the end of their life cycle.

Where possible I am a great believer in live and let live. I now have had honey bees nesting in the attic above my bedroom for 3 years! When they first set up home I asked an Apiarist how long he thought they would be in residence “ oh they will be gone by the end of summer” wrong! I have not got honey dripping through the ceiling yet and they really don’t bother me other than there can be quite a loud hum at times and no I do not mean because I haven’t changed my bedsheets:).

The BBC is obsessed with Drag Queens. They put them onto as many game shows as possible too, and their news site seems to feature a new Drag Queen story every day.
I think it's because they bought Ru Paul's Drag Race, and then needed to prove that the winners were "stars" by featuring them in as many other programs as possible.

I was never keen on Danny La Rue but loved Lily Savage. Dame Edna's good fun too but they were both great coemdians with something to say about life.

However, I can't cope with all the Me Me drama queen aspect of Ru Paul's show and was very pleased when they put it back on BBC3 as Possum would watch it when it was on BBC2.
