I'm a hermit and you still have to prove who you are and it's getting harder every day, one minute you need this then that to prove how i am

My Grandaughter Kat who has sight & hearing problems has Autism and at times quite difficult to live with. Now after she was told, she changed, no longer were people thinking she was being a pain and that changed her big time. Kat has now started Uni and is doing very well.
By the way Kat doesn't receive any benefits for her condition.

Once digital ids are up and running, I guarantee they will become essential for things like health care, getting DWP payments (eg pensions), getting on buses or trains, etc. A foolproof track and trace system that will be impossible to avoid. Businesses like supermarkets may be incentivised to require it. They will say it will stop shoplifting and as Wes wants to know what we are putting in our trolleys so we can be "nudged" towards spinach rather than snacks, courgettes over crisps, the "benefits" will be seen to outweigh personal autonomy. And god help us in the next pandemic, if the boll*cks inflicted on us last time is anything to go by.

A diagnosis can be a really positive thing, @john558, as your granddaughter's situation shows.

People keep saying that, but our government would have to be competent at commissioning joined-up IT systems to achieve it. They haven't shown any hint of that in the past.
Supermarkets would resist any attempt to control what we buy, as it would affect their profits. And they make the most profit from junk food.

What happens if you don't have a smartphone and have no intention of getting one? I know, as a pensioner, that I wouldn't have to have the digital id anyway BUT, in the future ....

I assume only certain people with security clearance will be able to demand to see your ID, not just some rail worker or bus driver.
Supermarkets already track most customers with loyalty cards, I dont think the government would be interested in who is buying brussel sprouts on a personal basis.

Can anyone explain why the midday news on BBC2 is being announced by a woman standing in the street in the pouring rain, with an umbrella, in Manchester, where an incident took place more than 24hrs ago.
                    Totally ridiculous IMO.

Digital ID was to stop illegals working, but as it has been pointed out to many ministers recently, it wont.

So now they announce they will stop asylum seekers bringing in relatives, apparently we are one of a few countries in Europe that allow that to happen.
Cant see them getting that one through the courts either.

Incompetence may indeed save us. Though the downside is a system riddled with errors may be hard for an individual to correct. If it accidentally decided you were dead, pension payments would cease, for example.

Supermarkets showed no sign of resisting gov edicts in the last pandemic, however bonkers these were. And they would love all the extra data. A few of us still slip through the net by eschewing loyalty cards. With id requirements, they could skip the whole "reward" issue and still get the data.

Just got an e mail from a local garden centre, apparently I need to book now for Santa's Grotty grotto.
I added the extra grotty bit.:roflol:

Hmm, I have less confidence than you over this, @pete. Once the system is in place, all manners of businesses could soon be making a case for access. And poor Brussels sprouts consumption could be linked to health records, or even available to life insurance companies, etc. (Obviously purchase does not equal consumption, which is where your smart fridge and hob would come into the equation. ;))

I hope I'm wrong, but we do need to think about all the potential for misuse before we put a single toe on the track, cos once the starter gun goes off, there will be no backtracking on it.
