They can ... if you have a smart meter. They could say 10p a unit from 2am to 3.15am, and £10 a unit from 7am to 9am. So, unless you keep turning your fridge on and off with the troughs and peaks (not advisable from a listeria/salmonella/death by food poisoning point of view), you will automatically be taking part.

Yes but I wont be turning my fridge on and off, I've already said I cant see the point of taking part to save a few pennies.
They will just charge those with the old meters the high rate all the time.

By December, the staff will be rather more jaded about the whole thing. By Christmas Eve, they will have a glazed, demented look. I think it is a form of employee torture.

Yes, once we have all been dragged kicking and screaming onto smart meters, they will be able to inflict pricing whims on us. Hence their keeness to get us with the programme.

I've not wanted a smart meter but I thought my meters were pretty old and needed replacing, I didn't get them changed just because I was told to, I did it because I thought they needed changing.
The electric one was particularly old.

Hopefully I wont have to read the meter every month from now on.

Let me have a go at converting.
          Peak 11.7p
          Mid 9p
          Low 6p

We've been told it's going up again by 29%.

And gas is a separate bill. In the winter it can be approximately £220 per month.

And water is also separate. About £90 a month in winter.

Yes, same. And high charges for sewage because they don't acknowledge lawn watering usage or that you could drink a glass and pee later at the office!

As I said, the reference/account nos. were "invalid" according to them and I was unable to contact anyone to query this other than by letter.

A few years ago I was at the dentist and heard the lady on the phone mention to someone how much fillings cost for private patients and it was 80-180 pounds for a simple filling and went up from there. The NHS on the other hand was about £50 for upto 6 fillings at the same time.

One of my brothers friends hadn't been to the dentist for years but had to go because of the amount of pain they were in. They can't get an nhs appointment because there are no surgeries taking on nhs patients at the moment, so had to go private. They need 2 teeth extracted and had to pay £150 for the privilege of knowing that but they can't afford the £650 quoted to remove the teeth.

I paid £28 for a nhs checkup last week that took about 2 mins, a simple 30 second check, bit of chat and see you in a year. The lady in front of me was even less because she wouldn't have an X ray, or let the dentist clean her teeth. When she left I heard the dentist say, we may as well make your next check up a year because you don't have many teeth left.

                    "shiney said:
Air source heat pumps don't heat detached properties properly unless they are powering underfloor heating or the original radiators have been replaced for larger ones because they don't heat the water as high as gas does."

Friends of mine bought a brand new house about 5 years so, so insulated to the n'th degree, and with underfloor heating. The air source heat pump was useless in their minds. They had to use the immersion heater all the time for hot water as it was never more than warm otherwise. Thankfully for them they don't like it too hot upstairs as the radiators were also only ever lukewarm.
They moved to another new build property earlier this year and managed to have a proper gas boiler.

@pete There is a private dentist down the road from us. Him missus who is also a dentist drives and enormous Merc 4x4. He used to drive a Maserati but now has a Ferrari. I forget the model, but did look it up at the time. New they start at over £150k. No wonder they have to charge so much.

Can anyone explain how someone can be released from prison by mistake, but then a few days later know you have made a mistake.
OK the other amazing thing is it's been going on for years, what is wrong with these people, is it just incompetence.

From what I read this morning, the one released on the day they arrived at prison had the wrong sentence period on the paperwork. He had been held on remand for the period on the paperwork so they had to let him go. Presumably no attempt made to confirm that the information was correct.
