I took my lawnmower in to be serviced just over a week ago. It's a Hayter, two years old, so still under warranty. A week on I have been told that the chap that does the servicing has had an accident and will be off sick for three months. I said is there anywhere else I can take it, he said no, they were the only agent for Hayter on the island and taking it somewhere else would make the warranty null and void. But he would see what he could do. Hmmmm......I'll be back on the phone Monday to see what's happening.

My hubby checked on this with Hayter themselves and apparently that's correct. Surely there must be some way round this.

Meanwhile I am visioning myself down on my hands and knees with a pair of scissors for the next three months. :th_scifD36:

Your on the IoM so your laws might be slightly different, but if you were on the big island, it would be the shop that sold you it that had to meet the terms of the contract of sale, so if they couldn't service it they'd have to give you a new one.

    Thanks Clueless,

That's interesting to know. It was actually a farm suppliers that sold it to me, but that shouldn't make any difference. I'll put what you said to them when I ring them on Monday. I'll also check the situation out with our local Trading Standards people and see what they have to say.

I'm fairly sure the 'Sale of goods act 1990 as amended' is EU wide these days. Its worthing looking up, but trading standards will be able to advise. Also worth looking up 'Consumer Direct', they are the public face of trading standards, sort of the first line support helpdesk if you like.

Most likely, trading standards will advise you to speak to the supplier to see if you can reach some sort of peaceful agreement before you start fighting them. Always best to see if you can sort it without a dispute if you can.

    Hi Clueless,

I won't be going in all guns blazing! I'll try the gentle approach first with some back-up from trading standards. I've spoken to them before and they are usually pretty good with what they suggest.

As you said laws and regulations can be different here. The island isn't in the EU, so I won't be bothering with that.

Thanks again, I'll let you know the outcome.

Just to let you know, I should have my lawnmower back early next week. The agent for Hayter here on the island has managed to find someone to take over repairs and servicing.

Phew! I can leave the scissors in the drawer.

By the look of the weather forecast I won't need it before then anyway!
