The latest Avian flu outbreaks are a real worry. I have already bought extra tarpaulin to cover my runs if/when DEFRA decide we need to put our birds on lock down, my guess is it's only a matter of time before they bring this rule back in. For the time being Biosecurity is being encouraged....don't let wild birds share drinkers & food sources with hens/keep all areas clean/discourage rats etc.
How on earth im going to keep my free ranging flock in is a worry! This morning we had to leave them in their runs for about 45 mins whilst we repaired the wind damaged fence & ive never heard such a racket!

Biosecurity measures are a :snorky: stock as some people think it doesn't apply to them !

Didn't last very long did it? This will just keep coming back every year. Only if something really bad happens will it perhaps be treated seriously.

Lets wait till we get a fire so we can put it out, It's best not to have a fire in the first place

Just thinking back to Foot and Mouth and seeing animals moving around after the movement ban, one was farm to other farm and they got paid cull money :nonofinger:

Oh yes @Jiffy, as I'm sure you know I'm a member of the admin team on a hen fb page, some people have already openly said they aren't buying any disinfectant or keeping their hens in if we go to lockdown :nonofinger:I so wish these idiots could see the bigger picture :wallbanging:, fortunately we do have a lot of members taking it very seriously.
I have ordered more DEFRA approved disinfectant, I was out scrubbing my patio last night at 10.30 (thank god for outside lights!) I've removed my bird feeders from the back garden to the front, have covered both my runs & two foot baths are in place...it's not that difficult :gaah:

I forsee these measures being put in place year after year, for up to 6 months at a time.

I also forsee every year thousands of new hen keepers buying birds in the summer, then throwing up theit hands in horror at the difficulty and expense of putting these measures in place only a few months after they've aquired a flock.

To my mind, it is down to basic husbandry.
My girls go into lockdown every Winter.
By November, they are confined to quarters and given fresh bedding every few days and weekly coop litter.
They are not given free range until Easter.

How difficult is that? :dunno:
