Has anyone ever tried growing vegetables on those large flexi tub buckets? I've got a large 40l one left over from plastering my spare bedroom. It looks big enough but I wonder if it would be too flexible to grow anything in it particularly potatoes.

@Jungle Jane - here is a link to the making of the strawberry tree last year.

I reckon the compost in between the two pipes in mine has become compacted, so is incapable of holding any moisture. It started off as a good idea, but latterly seemed not so good. :dunno:

I cut the barrel in half today, and I think I could be onto a winner with this idea - they do lose a wee bit of their rigidity, but don't become floppy and manage to retain their shape, and give a nice solid planter that allows for a depth of around 24"

I'm going to be asking around at work to see if we still get these barrels and hope that we still just dispose of them when they are done - if I could mooch a few more, I reckon they would be better than the bags (although would need a lot more compost!)

Interesting. I've toyed with the idea of growing them in guttering or raised boxes along the side of my greenhouse. I wonder if there is a reason why everyone else isn't doing it though.

So there are two pipes there then? I imagine digging over the soil would be very difficult. Have you thought about making one of these instead? Or using a pallet, I image watering must be a pain through....

Could you somehow attach the two together so you could stack one on top of the other to make it deeper?

I was wondering this. But as they slot together I'm not sure how sturdy it would be

Shouldn't be too difficult to screw the bits in place and then attach to the bottom. I guess it depends on how thick the wood is as to how sturdy it is.
