Hiya Charlie,

I think your graft will be a knobbly bit lower down, as the tree would have been grafted when young. It's good to find where the graft is, because any shoots and leaves below that should be removed. They would probably be plain green though, which makes spotting them easier.

With the ties so tight I think you're going to damage the bark and the important layer under the bark, when they rub. I think the idea is to give them a bit of room to sway, but not so much that their roots get damaged.

Now the blossom has fallen from the pear tree we have tiny wee pears starting to form ! Pear... Sorry Bear in mind this is the first fruit tree I / we have ever planted so it's a huge thrill to see these developments !!

My wife seems to think the Bears... Sorry Pears won't be suitable for eating in the first year ???

Oh and the Autumn blaze is leafing up like mad and looking Acer... Sorry Ace !!

 

I had a wonderful pear tree in my previous garden ... it was quite a few years old too ... the pears were *never* suitable for eating (cooking, definitely, but not eating straight from the tree).

Thanks. I will keep an eye on the strap but for now it's nice and loose and was put there just to act as fail safe .. How many years before the strap and post can be removed ? Or does it stay forever ?

What's the diameter at the base of the trunk Charlie? I think you said you'd planted it last autumn?
