:) Nice to see you doing a flyby Woo. xx

Louise, the Portuguese are not really into gardening ... but are getting there. They plant the likes of Bougainillea, Oleader, Lantana, etc, things you don't have to tend to. Most of the garden centers are Dutch owned. Things are improving but we've a long way to go.

I call roses 'one day wonders' here because sadly they don't last much longer than that. Believe it or not, the photo of the Sunseeker cluster I posted yesterday was taken three days ago ... and here is the cluster last evening ... it will all be gone by tomorrow but in the meantime it is a one stemmed waft of heaven ...

visited my favourite nursery today and another nursery i love bought my usual array of trees and unusual plants, got a primula, several golden hops,a fern and a massive shrub as a gift, anyway tried to resist the urge but kept being drawn back to breath in the exquisite perfume and several attempts to resist the urge later came home with a gorgeous david austins "gertrude jekyll" think im safely converted to the way of roses :heehee: already planning my next 1 :fingerdrum:

        Hi Victoria

Sunseeker seems to be a real flower factory. Pity the flowering time is so short. I assume this has to do with the local climate and heat.
Might be an idea to consult some of our American cousins to see what flowers best for them in places like Southern California etc.

        Thank you Clare

I must own up to being a bit of a fan when it comes to old roses and David Austin's varieties are a clever combining of the best of the old with the best of the modern.
Getting the colour right when photographing them is a bit of a challenge.... Although I find a few extra reference shots with the old reliable Kodak Grey Card is a big help.

        Lovely roses everyone :-))
Kevin know what you mean about getting the colours just right, I have 'William Shakespeare' too, amazing colour, but one thats really hard to capture on a photo, you've done a pretty good job though:dbgrtmb:
Louise I'm waiting for your fabulous 'Fimbriata' shrub rose :WINK1:, still on my wish list.

        Hiya Kevin

I lived in America for 20 years, 14 of which were in the Deep South ... hot, hot, hot ... and my sister (Kedi-Gato from Germany) now spends half the year at her home in Florida. But the South is hot and humid whereas I assume (I have never been) that California is drier. Sadly I have no more room for roses.

Kevin, I keep telling myself that I have absolutely NO MORE ROOM for roses but I must admit I am tempted by one called 'Well Being', which looks like an Austin rose but was actually bred by Harkness. It's a very pretty rose but what clinches it for me is that the scent is rated as 10: exceptional. Maybe I could somehow clear a space ...

Well, if you are going to succumb to to temptation....Gertrude Jeckyll is as good any.
Probably my favourite Austin. Wonderful rich pink when it opens first and consistently one of the best scented. Needs to be pruned - rather than just dead-headed - to encourage repeat flowering if grown as a bush. Grown as a climber it responds well to being trained horizontally.

Just thought I'd add to the collection

                Hi All

Just thought I'd add to the collection! Sadly they're no thanks to me - we have recently moved in and the roses have just come into bloom and are just gorgeous! Xx:sunny:

Here are some of my roses, though few of them have names...
