Is it wise/safe to put moss on the 'leaves-only compost heap?

If by leaf only you mean leaf mold, then no, I wouldn't. Leaves make a nutrionally poor compost but a wonderful sole improver so far as lightening it goes. Put your moss on a general compost heap as it will breakdown into the nutritionally rich stuff.

I collect quite a mass of moss [proverb]after scarifying my lawns, every 2 years or so, and I have always mixed it into my leaf compost heap as I would have far too much to go on my prized and guarded garden heap. I always looked at moss as being a baddie so this year I will put some on my prize heap as well. But the rest will go in with the leaves also improving this heap.

I use it for hanging baskets, Hans! Nice and cheap, and environmentally friendly! ;)
