My lawn over the past few years has become increasingly mossy so a few questions

What's the best way to get rid?

would identifying the type help with removal?

    When can I get started?

I have no problem with useing the lawn feed and moss killer things but haven't had much sucess in the past. I'm not afraid of hard work if a mass of rakeing is involved.

    Thanks all :)

I have the same problem. In fact much of the grass seems to have died off and my lawn is more moss than grass.

I don't know if this is the right strategy, but here's my plan:
First, I'm going to be very brutal with the rake. Not a lawn rake, a proper one. Then I'm going to bust up the soil surface a bit with my fork. Chuck down some chicken poo pellets, then seed over with a thin coat of grass seed mixed with sharp sand.

spray or water on iron sulphate solution or apply lawn sand. After a few days when the moss has turned black scarify.

Overseed and feed the grass with a liquid feed.

Paul's said just about all that you need to know.
Only advice I'd add is that if you have a lot of lawn then hire, borrow or buy a mechanical scarifier as raking a large lawn is a killer of a job if you want to do it well.
