I planted a few sunflowers. I bought the seeds from Lidl. Some got eaten by slugs and snails but I have 3 very tall sunflowers. Only one has flowered so far. I have noticed that the shortest of the 3 has a side shoot by each leaf, and some of the side shoots have a flower bud. Has anyone else had something like this? I am posting a photo. I'm very excited to see how many flowers it will have!

Welcome @Gloucester Gardener ! A lot of sunflower varieties produce side shoots with flowers - I found the ones in various brown and tan shades did this very well. Unfortunately the stormy weather has meant a number of mine that were about 12 foot tall have fallen over, so I salvaged the side flowers to bring inside and enjoy in a vase.

Just reading about the state flower of Kansas, the sunflower.

Perhaps you could all check this fact out, the flowers mostly face eastwards??????.

Now I know if you are growing them against a wall that is not going to happen, but out in the open...........?

Mine are all facing vaguely eastwards. I thought they were supposed to turn during the day and always face the sun. Sunflower in Italian is girasole which literally means turn sun. So they would face eastwards in the morning.

I was reading that is not true, they don't move with the sun and generally face in an easterly direction, was just wanting to know it that is vaguely true.

Let us know which direction they are facing this evening.

Mine are facing roughly an Easterly direction, the were facing South-ish, but the high winds have bent them slightly. P1010116.JPG P1010117.JPG P1010117.JPG

Two of mine are still facing east while 1 has turned about 90 degrees.

If I save some seeds from the multi-headed one and plant them next year, do you think I'll be more likely to get more multi-headed ones?
