That tape came out in 1979/80? I think the Buggles tune is the latest on it.

It does cover most of the 70s. Apart from punk.

Our next door neighbour bought me my first walkman for Christmas, a Toshiba, and it was the worlds best thing ever! Way better than gold. The amount of batteries that I must have gone through..........

And @Snorky85 - I still have a couple of Jive Bunny albums on MP3 (my music collection would scare you, it is so varied and a lot of it is just plain old).

Ah, the rented phone from the GPO....... TV and video from the local TV shop; paying up the automatic washing machine with a book at the Co-Op (I remember when that was installed - a fully automatic washing machine and a front loader to boot! Zannusi, the appliance of science). The gas board, the water board, the electricity board - and out traipsing round all of them to pay bills or buy things, I remember it all well.

@Loki - I share your sentiments, but we need to paint a smile on and keep those home fires burning for the day that Armandii returns.

Our GC friend @Jenny namaste knits some fantastic tea cosies. With a bit of luck she may have some photos of them. I have, but can't find them at the moment  She made quite a few for our Open Day, to be sold for charity, and they went quite quickly. :dbgrtmb:

They don't make stuff like they used to.

This is my cassette tape deck I bought in 1972.

I've changed the belts but other than that it works whenever I want it to.

                    P1020303.JPG

I keep a token number of cassettes below my record deck. Loads more stuck away in a drawer.

                    P1020306.JPG

I've even still got a "tape head cleaner."

                    P1020305.JPG

Lots of CDs in plastic racks I altered to fit the space available. Don't often get played., as I've thousands of mp3s and some videos in a stick in the side of my TV

                    P1020307.JPG

This is my record deck of the same vintage. It's also belt driven. The belt has been changed and I keep a spare under the turntable. Still got a lot of vintage jazz vinyl albums. Somr fifty years old bought in my teens.

                    P1020304.JPG

and of course I have my jukebox wallboxes which I can use select mp3s on an i-Pod to play through my equally vintage hi-fi.

                    P1020042.JPG

I've still got a VHS recorder/player under the CD/DVD player and Humax PVR, below the TV in the front room. I can play anything through my hi-fi via an auto selector in the snake pit of wires behind the TV. I'v a lot of "film noir" on VHS recorded off the TV I re-recorded them on the Humax if they come on again and ditch the tape. One of our kids bought me a bit of kit to transfer VHS to DVD or to mp4 whatever, but I've never bothered to use it.

We're also still using daily a Binatone clock/radio I acquired in the mid-eighties. The first thing that company sold in this country.

Reading through this brought back lots of memories. Our first phone at home was on a party line with a neighbour as there wasnt the capacity to install us a dedicated line. Had to press a button on top of the phone to make a call but if the neighbour was on the phone you could hear the conversation - imagine that today ?

Even when we married in the early 80's we were told by the parent that we had visited to give them 'two rings' to let them know we had got home.

Then came my first mobile phone a Panasonic transportable with batteries 4 x the size of a modern day phone.

Things do move on. With music, I remember my first Walkman and then CD Walkman, taking a wad of CDs on holiday to play.
Similarly, moving to CD's and then storing them on a NAS to now subscribing to Tidal where I can play pretty much any track or album that I can think of. The choice is great but doenst come close to looking at the artwork from a vinyl album.

Simpler is sometimes better. Progress can be good... saying this having owned a mini back in the day - show it the slightest amount of damp and the thing would not start. Today I jump into my car and know it will start (now that's the kiss of death !)

I had a Walkman I "found" it in the back of a drawer a couple of years ago. Hadn't been used in nearly twenty years, but I'd left the batteries in it and they had corroded.

I had an early "portable" CD player, I tried using it in my car, but it would jump at the slightest bump in the road.
As a comment on modern technology, we re-vamped the kitchen thirteen years ago with all new appliances, every one has since had to be replaced, three twice!

Part of the throwaway society unfortunately. Maybe one day people will grasp hold of the circular economy in anger and build in a level of repairability into their products. Unfortunately, too much is now designed and built to a price.

@Fat Controller. This thread has turned into an interesting 'Gadgets of the Past', memories for the 'older folk', novel for the younger! So, perhaps you could change the title? Or, split it from the not so pleasant one and close it ... and create a new one? Sorry, I know that creates work! :rolleyespink:

@Victoria - I don't mind doing this sort of work, you are all worth it :)

Sorry if things look a bit disjointed folks, but Victoria's idea to move this into a thread of it's own was a good one, and hopefully we will be able to carry on with what has become a really interesting thread.

@Jenny namaste - I will come back to your post and getting it into Crafters Corner a wee bit later :)
