@Jenny namaste - I have copied Shiney's post into Crafters Corner. I hope you don't mind, but I kept it in this thread too, as I thought it belonged here too.

@andrews - you mentioning cars, we had a similar discussion in the office the other day. I am a bit of a petrolhead, and have recently gone backwards in terms of age of car and now have one that I can (when I get fitter) lift the spanners on.... Anyway, one of the younger lads at work was asking advice about his car the other day, and cars in general, and he struggled to believe that I was happy to get my second car because it had a heater!

As a kid I helped with a lot of jobs on the family cars. Big ends, valve guides and other bits on one car taught me loads. My first car, Mk 1 Escort NVS 478M (green and rust) taught me not to trust underseal. We had to rebuild the floor pretty much - good job dad was handy with the welder or it would be a write-off. I wish I still had that car - it would be worth more than the £475 that I paid for it in 1983.

Since then I had company cars and haven't done much spannering. My wife has a summer toy - 16 years old with 11000 miles on the clock. Nothings worn out but the MOT last week identified that the brake pads have hardened and are not as effective as they should be. Ive decided that its time to get my hands dirty again and replace the pads. Not a massive job but I will enjoy it and it will get me out of the mindset of taking it to the garage for any repairs.

Wifes first car was the mini EET 500V (why do I remember these reg numbers). It was applejack green - a horrible colour. It got us around (when it was dry). Good fun but scary when it finally got to 70mph

My first car was a Citroen Ami8 - VKX 545L; 602cc's of noise and not a lot of grunt, brakes were a joke, everything was rotten, but the suspension was fun (sitting bouncing up and down at the traffic lights with my friends in the car was a giggle); trouble is, the thing was so bloomin' dangerous (rotten bits and bobs, screwdriver start and brakes that thought they were optional), I took it to the local scrappy and refused to leave until I saw it crushed.

Car two was a VW Golf MK1 - PKY 459X - and what a car that was! On the log book as a 1100cc, but it had been given a replacement engine that had been bored out to something silly; from a standing start, it could climb trees it was so quick........... shame the 4 speed gearbox meant that it screamed like a kettle at 70 mph.

I have had loads of cars, many were pretty much bangers, littered with company cars too. I was also 'that' guy...... the one who would go and drive someone's car home for them when the clutch had expired, or the one who would take their car by the scruff of its neck when they wanted to see what it could do...........

The one car brand I have had more than any other, is Jaguar - and for all they get a bad press sometimes as being expensive, or unreliable, I can honestly say that is the exception rather than the rule. I am down to around 5000 miles a year now, and wanted an auto with a bit of comfort now that I am disabled, and only Volvo or Jaguar were offering what I wanted in my budget range, so I now have this baby - meet Winnie:

My first car was an old Saab 96 2 stroke.. then A newer 4stroke 96 with the square headlights Then a 96 estate.. These were always my favourite cars.. I had an Alfa Romeo which was a great drivethen a Vauxhall’s and a break for my lovely Mini clubman but that had to go as it developed amajor fault that was engine and gearbox out which was going to be more than my fave was worth so sadly had to go and back with Vauxhall’s again now..
This is the sort of car my first one was. I loved these cars as they were all column change and had free wheel or fixed wheel if the weather was bad.. Great cars.. Can’t find a pic of mine at present but same colour as below one

This video sums up how I feel about the current love of technology (careful, it's a bit sweary in places)................

Fairs fair, the tinterweb is a wonderful thing. But do we really need couple sat in coffee shops browsing their twonkbook feeds whilst ignoring each other. Do they really need to be checking it on the bus, at work, in the pub. No, they need to get a life. Worse still, do they really believe that anyone gives a damn that their sprog is four today or that they've just cooked something using the stuff in their HelloFresh box!

Phone any organisation up and no-one can answer your question, no one, not one single person amongst the many that you were punted between!

TVs offer amazing picture quality but they self destruct on their second birthday and it costs more to mend than buy a new one!

Cars are now designed to last for eight years, washing machines two or three, shoes six miles!

Modern life is rubbish! (rant over)
