I'd never presume to interfer with anyone elses lawn or garden. Anyway, each to their own in my opinion, so I'd try to ignore it. |In all the places I have lived it is understood you never trespass on a neighbours property unless invited, which is the way I like it. I occasionally offer to mow an old ladies front lawn a few houses away when her son is away as she can't do it herself.

I'm just renting, but my lawn is mowed twice a week at the moment and always looks good

if and when I get my own property, I will opt for a lawn as used on bowling greens, and I will get a good cylinder mower

even in South Africa, my lawns were always pristine ... I used to fertilize with fertilizer called guana plus (was a mixture of seagull poo and synthetic ferts similar to miracle gro) .... I used to have to mow at least twice a week, and my lawn was always deep green

Why a cylinder mower? and why use a seed mix like that?

you cannot get a bowling green type lawn using a rotary mower or a flymo ... thats why they use them on bowling greens ....

no, I won't be playing bowls on my lawn, I just like a well kept lawn, and that's as good as it gets ...

my kids are old now, so they won't be kicking footballs around and I will never own a cat

I've been speaking to our local bowling greenkeeper for the past year or so, as I often walk past there when he is working, and he lives 5 houses away from me ....

it takes a lot of work to keep a lawn like that in pristine condition, and you need to know what to fertilize with, and when to fertilize, when to aerate and when to scarify ....

My "lawn" has one real purpose.
Its somewhere for dog to do its daily buisness.

Other than that, I would still have a bit of "grass", to sit on, on those long hot summer evenings, that we always get around this time of year.

As for intervening where the neighbours are concerned, no way, its up to them.
I mean its not like trees and such that get taller each year, grass will reach four ft or so in a season and that's it.

it all depends where you live, the cost of your house, and the value of your neighbour's homes

move into a posh area where homes cost £2-£4 million pounds each, and let your lawn grow 4 feet tall, spoil the area ... and then see what happens

you will be seen as an outcast

Not something that is likely to bother me then.
I think if I could buy a 2 to 4 million pound house, in that case I'd grow the lawn 4ft high just for fun.

I'd call it a wild flower meadow.

*dim* you really are a snob.:WINK1:

not really, as I'm poor .... I would say that I'm a 'realist' .... I work as a gardener in some posh areas aswell, and know how people think .... I am often asked by clients to knock on neighbour's doors and offer my services when neighbours gardens are untidy

But then it’s up to the individual, if they want their lawn or even there whole entire garden doing then they will ask, i myself work and have worked for several estates and big houses in Northampton and you should see their neighbours gardens, it all depends on what the individual wants

Fortunately in my particular case I was friends with the neighbour whose lawn I mowed; I imagine it would make for an awkward situation if I wasn't!

You should still be careful. My mate works away, so his garden gets neglected for weeks on end. Before he got his job away he was good mates with the neighbours on both sides, and across the road. Then he went away for about 6 weeks, and while he was gone the neighbours decided collectively to look after his garden for him. Unfortunately they trimmed hedges more than he wanted, pulled several of his plants out mistaking them for weeds, and various other well intentioned errors. My mate didn't play war because he understood that it was all done with the best intentions, but he told me he was secretly livid about it, mainly because they'd done it without his permission more than anything else.

It depends on the neighbour's circumstances. I mow my neighbours front lawn because it only takes a couple of minutes extra whilst I'm doing mine. She is a single mum with 3 very young kids so never has much time to do anything.
