Got sent this seed from ebay and it didn't look like a red strelitzia. Seller was adamant it is.

So I've germinated it and this is the seedling - any ideas coz I think the seller is telling porkies! Looks like a Jacaranda at this point

Could be quite a few things, definitely not Strelitzia, those seed are unmistakable, by the bright orange tuft.
I dont think its Jacaranda either, possibly Albizia, but too soon to say.

did the seed come from China.

I reckon, Acacia or Caesalpinia, can you remember the shape and colour of the seed?
Acacias are usually small, black and shiny and their roots stink, Caesalpinia are usually flat brown and shiny.

Small seed, about 2 or 3mm, black and shiny. Very obviously not a Strelitzia but supplier was adamant (and wrong). Required a refund but was only a few quid anyway. I'd just like to know what I'm growing lol

That rules out Caesalpinia :). Doesn't look the right shape for Cassia, so most likely Acacia...

Definitely not Jacaranda as I have two, their seeds are winged.

Don't know if this will help ...
