Booked a holiday 2 weeks ago to go to Berlin in June, and I lose my passport on the bus or somewhere... no idea where it is...

Now I have to pay £77 to replace it, insane.

    Anyone else lost theirs?

Not lost it, but its due to expire (or has expired). So I'll have to spend a small fortune for a new one I guess.

Its worse for the womenfolk you know. When the wife and I got married, she had to get a new passport because in keeping with tradition, she took my surname (they take everything else after all, why leave the name?). So even though none of her personal history had changed, her identity hadn't changed, she was still the same lass with the same face and the same parents, same date of birth and everything, it was a new application and therefore full price just to change the name. Its not like the government hadn't already been paid for the inconvenience. It costs money to get wed, and some of that money goes to the gov to for the inconvenience of noting on a computer the new name.

Oh, lucky you, I have to apply to Spain to get my renewal this year which will cost me €185 (give or take £153 depending on the exchange rate in July) ... and I don't use it as I have Portuguese residency and don't plan to leave here ... but have to have it as I am not a Portuguese national. Oh, the joys of beaurocracy (sp?).

Why apply to Spain when you live in Portugal ?

Why not apply to UK or AMERICA where you were resident ?

Why not if a new citizen not apply to PORTUGAL ?

        Just interested

        :) Hello Jack

I cannot apply to the UK or America because I do not live in either country.

In April 2011 seven processing centers were set up around the world for people living abroad to apply for / renew passports ...

        http://centralcontent.fco.gov.uk/resources/en/pdf/central-content-pdfs/faqs.pdf

... you will note here which countries (eleven listed on the left) have to apply to Madrid ...

        http://ukinspain.fco.gov.uk/en/help-for-british-nationals/passports/how-to-apply/portugal

I know many people who have used this service and say it is quick and efficient. The alternative is for me to fly back to the UK and personally renew it ... but that then entails the costs of flights, travel in the UK, accommodation and way too much of my precious time for something I can do on-line / by post.

Ah well, I am glad then that the only time I have had a passport was in 1965, which was also the last time I ever went on holiday too.
