    The rhetoric continues -BBC News

    This is genuinely worrying, as it could get very nasty indeed; China still seem to be trying to deter any conflict (comes to something when its China acting as the responsible party!), whilst retaining their allegiance with North Korea.

    Sure, a lot of the military technology that North Korea has is outdated and agricultural at best, but lets not forget the damage that was done by Hiroshima or Nagasaki back in 1945! That, and as Jack points out, they have vast numbers of men so could sustain any battle for longer than many would expect.

    Part of me thinks that the best bet (should it properly kick off) is for the US and the rest of the world to wade in and give them a swift hiding and to take them out fully and rapidly; however, what would China's reaction be to that?

    The other part of me thinks that the best bet is to let South Korea take control of their own destiny and for the likes of the US etc to simply supply the technology and the weapons (and it looks like this is the current plan);

    Of course, the best bet for everyone would be if the wee chubby fella carries on belly-aching for a while, and then gets bored and moves on to something else. Perhaps he should take up gardening?

      And here's us all complaining bitterly (with good cause!) about the weather. I visited last year what had been a secret military bunker, 1 of about 7 I think in the UK, (it's about 15 miles from where I live) built because of the threat of the last nucular war. From the scale of it and vast amounts of money needed to build it, that threat must have been a lot more likely than Jo Public was led to believe. I was flabberghasted that what had been built was much more with the view of when rather than if an attack happened. All the secret bunkers were decommisioned I believe, some not all that long ago. They just might be needed again!

        China is behaving because they're worried about their economy. When this kicks off, no matter how it happens, China loses out.

        China's economy is based on exports to the west (us lot and the yanks among others), and its neighbour, North Korea.

        China would lose least money by sitting on the fence. That way they only lose much trade with North Korea as their spending is diverted to war fighting. Unless of course they buy their weapons and ammo off China, in which case China becomes our enemy and they have to spend money on fighting us. If China chooses to fight us, then their economy is stuffed because it is based on export to us (which would cease immediately if they became our enemy) and their infrastructure that they built on the back of the trade with the west, infrastructure which would become key military targets. The Chinese top dogs know this, and that's why they're trying to keep the peace.

          I'm pleased to be able to say I've heard back from my mate in Taiwan, after several weeks of silence from him.

          Word is, lots of nations in the region are ready to go at no notice. He was deliberate vague, but he hinted that if it kicks off, it will be rapid and decisive, "before the rest of Asia gets dragged in".

          Apparently the reason for this trouble is that the new leader, who is much more open to "western ideas" such as patience and tolerance than his predecessors, and as a result his leadership is already in question, so he has to demonstrate his prowess or lose his credibility and authority among his more hardline peers.

          This is really sad, because I bet the ordinary folk of North Korea don't want to get their behinds kicked. There's no possibility of a 'petty skirmish' because North Korea have already increased the stakes too much. Whatever happens has to be decisive.
