I think there is a newish disease commonly called "sudden oak death", but I'm pretty sure thats not the problem with those leaves H20.

Pete, I have clients who have had a problem with their conifer hedge for about 7 years. They were told repeatedly, it was Honeyfungus. Even though there was no sign of it.3 years ago I told them it was Sudden Oak Death. I told them to get in touch with DEFRA, nothing, get in touch with the Forestry Commission, nothing. They finally found a company at the Chelsea show who have comnfirmed what I`ve said all along, Sudden Oak Death. And it is in Wales, now. And spreading.

 

Hang about here.....so does Sudden Oak Death affect conifers then...cause if so, why isn't it called something else..."flummoxed from Wales".:confused:

 

Intresting Dai, along my travels ive noted a lot of conifer deaths in hedges, coincidence perhaps or something else.

But that sounds a bit naff.

I think we should all learn the latin name.

 

The one that`s causing most problems in the UK is Phytophthora, kerlowiana. Named because it was first found in Cornwall. It is not just Oaks which are affected. Rhododendrons, Camellias, conifers, all can succumb to this family of diseases. With conifers, Paul, they start to die from the middle out, but they look alright, outside, while the ground is wet. When the ground dries out, however, they suddenly die. Literally within 7 to 10 days.

 

Back to the original question,H2O the problem appears to be Silk button spangle gall (Neuroterus numismalis) they are caused by a gall wasp(Hymenoptera) the leaves will fall to the ground and in spring the wasps will emerge.
