You must be stupid was amongst three negative comments that I received today for making this batch of 8" high deer.
I had intended to make 30 of them, but two problems reared their ugly heads. The first being the new band saw blades that I bought. They were packaged wrongly and were two inches too short, then then second problem happened when my one remaining blade snapped half way through the day!

The reason for me being called stupid, is that I'm giving my work away to children for free. I'm doing an exhibition and demonstration next weekend and wanted to involve children, by getting them to sand up the deer above and then take them home as a reward/pressie. If just one child gets inspired, then I have achieved something good, and yet others only put you down for wanting to be nice.
Sadly because of the problems with the blades, I'm now stuffed to get them all made in time. They take approx 17mins each to cut out, and I just don't have the time. Today was my one shot.

Oh Eddie, so sorry to hear of your trauma ... and your work looks wonderful and for such a good cause.

My best wishes are with you for a good result at the end ... I think they are lovely.

You've done a grand job and if anyone shows you disrespect they are showing it to me & Fishy Andy too.

Just let them know that we are "Concerned by their lack of respect"

I wish I had talent like that.

I think what you set out to do is a good thing, it certainly doesn't make you stupid to want to do something nice. The thing is, not everybody understands these days, I think because so often people are ground down over the years by lack of gratitude, courtesy and basic manners from others. Its not their fault. Sometimes its difficult to see the positive things when they are very subtle. I would bet for example, that if you gave one of your wooden deer to each of 30 kids, probably 20 of them would take it without so much as a thank you or a smile, and the remainder might grunt a thanks because someone has reminded them to. However, the bit you don't get to see is them taking it home, and making sure it gets home, and then proudly showing everyone what they've got and telling them about how they got it etc etc.

When I was a kid, my grandad, who was a talented carpenter/joiner, made my older sister and I various presents. Two that I remember best were our sledge and our pinball game. Both hand made to the highest standard. We treasured those things, but when I think back, I don't think either my sister or I ever even hinted any gratitude to our grandad.

Many thanks for the kind words, sadly I can't take any credit for the talent etc for this one. This is the guy who deserves the credit http://woodgears.ca/reindeer/index.html I simply used the design. His site and work is amazing.

Clueless, you brought back so many childhood memories to me. It almost sounds as though we had the same grandad.

Ref the children and the deer, I reckon that I can use the off cuts that came from the sides. They still look like deer, and I'm sure that any child will be just as happy with them.

I showed the wife this thread yesterday. She thought about it for a second, and then said, 'he'll find a way to sort it, people like him always find a way'. Sounds like she was right.:dbgrtmb:

                Thanks for the replies.:)

The weekend went pretty well, and I managed to come away from it having learn't a few things about peoples likes and dislikes in relation to sculpture, and also met some very very people along the way.
The children who turned up were brilliant, and after utilising the off cuts of wood, I had enough deer to go around.:)

This was my work in progress for the weekend.

You are extremely talented! The only thing I would achieve with a band saw would be a rather rapid amputation, and considerable blood loss! :snork:

I take it you sell your pieces? If you don't - you should. I'd happily save my pennies up for that planter in the top pic of your last post.
