My local paper has run a story that this plant is toxic to both humans and animals, I have one growing in a pot, should i get rid of it?

well i would of thought unless you have very curious (and hungry pets) or children around it would be fine in fact there are quite a few more poisonous wild plants about

Its the first time I have heard that they are poisonous. Not that I would dream of getting rid of mine. I do not have a problem with pets interested in it thankfully and I have no children running around likely to take bites out of it so I need not worry. However, if you have very young children it might be a problem if they are likely to want to touch it or bite at it. Not sure in which way it is poisonous I assume only if you consume its leaves or bark? Kalmia is right there are lots of plants such as yew and foxgloves that are really poisonous.

    Hello Paul.

It is true that Nerium Oleander is poisonous ... all parts of it and the taste is so bitter that even goats will not eat it!

We have had several discussions on here regarding poisonous plants and we all probably have more poisonous ones in our gardens than not. I have two Oleanders, but I also have Poinsettia, Brugmansia and Solanum which are equally poisonous .... as are the bulbs under the ground.

Here are some plants that are poisonous to animals .... I know you have your Pebbles and Oscar and may be concerned but I too have cats and have never known them to eat anything plantwise other than grass.

As far as humans go, we don't normally eat our plants which we have lovingly tended to and are more likely to step on a rake lying amiss on the ground so it flies up and clobbers us in the face or poke ourselves in the eyes with a branch. :D

I would assume parents would pass along their knowledge to their offspring.
