I aim to grow mine outdoors but get an early start using the greenhouse.

I sow my giant kelsae onions in december and then under growlamps for a couple of months before gradually hardening off to plant outdoors in April. My ordinary onions get sown in January and also go under growlamps if there is room. Usually they are relegated to the greenhouse without heat in February or March. Again these get planted outdoors in April depending on the weather.

I know the competition growers keep theirs in a greenhouse all the time, I don't have space nor that bothered about competing.

So I think you should start sowing in January and pot on etc just keeping in your greenhouse. They do need a long growing period to achieve good sized bulbs. Mine get harvested in August when the tops go yellow.

Kelsae today, looking a bit better than last year (they all went down with a fungal disease in the wet spring)

Looking good, you are tempting me to try and grow some big ones next year.

All mine are multi sown, 10 to a clump for spring onions and 4 to 6 for normal onions and the zebrunne shallots IMG_20220625_092101448_HDR.jpg

Kelsae are nearly 15" in diameter. That's the best size I've ever had at this stage of the season (pride comes before a fall)

Not great but I didn't intend growing any onions this year.
Most spent their early days getting dug out by foxes and I've not watered so not bad really. DSC03181.JPG

They are in an onion bag now hanging up, I can confirm they will not break any records and your giant ones are safe, John.

Strange thing, not one bolted in this weather I would have expected some to but its been "consistently dry" so maybe that is why.

Now you mention it very few of mine bolted, just a few of the winter Japanese type. I'm pulling all mine up this weekend in the hope that a good spell of hot weather will help them store. It's bound to rain.

Most of my walla walla bolted and a few zebrune shallots. The F1 santero and hytech did not though, they are the keeping onions. I forgot to thin all my onions, I multi sowed them so had too many per station leading to very small to medium sized onions. Next time I'll make sure I only have 4 max per station if I multisow them again.

The walla walla do taste very good though, remarkably sweet, with a different flavour to something like white lisbon which also bulb up. I still have some of those in the ground from a february sowing.

Just checked our local forecast. It promises a bit of thunder and rain on Monday night. I think it'll evaporate as soon as it touches the parched earth but fingers crossed.. :noidea:

Pulled up my giant kelsae, the best one is 19.5" circumference and 1.464 kg (3lb 3 oz). The size is about what I've managed in the past but strangely they are pound less than in previous years. I think the lack of rain may have something to do with it:

I'm going to freeze them as these giant ones don't store so well.
