My grand daughter gave me one of these from M&S. It's in a small pot with sort of woody stuff. Basically I know nothing about them. Help. How do I keep it?:dh:

M&s Orchids are usually Phaelenopsis (Moth Orchids) These have a long lasting flowering period. each flower can last over a month. Similar orchids can be treated the same.
They need good light and very good drainage, this is why they are in an open orchid compost which should never be saturated. They are normally in a clear plastic pot enabling the roots to have light (as they would growing in trees). Although often sold in ceramic pots they are better taken out. Water them once every week at the most from the top on a drainer or somehing and allow to drain off for half an hour or so, they must never stand in water.
When the stem has completely finished flowering cut it iff at the base. Although not a very attractive plant when not in flower it should flower again possibly within a year (mine has).
Best of luck with it R.:)

Thank you. Everything explained. I never ever knew about light at the roots. I shall keep it in it's little plastic pot. Should I transplant into a bigger one? Assuming I don't kill it off in the meantime.:hehe:

No, they prefer to be kept rootbound and they don't make much growth anyway.:)
