Pete, my P robelinii has pushed itself up level with the rim of it's pot so I might try sawing the bottom 2" off like you will with your CIDP.
My Washy is in the ground and looks good at the moment but it may suffer in a long cold spell.

I've got a Washy in the ground strongy, its been there a long time now, but suffered really badly in the cold winters a few years ago, I find keeping the water out of the growing point goes a long way to getting them through the winter.

Let us know how you get on regarding the P. robelinii, I have a feeling it might work with most palms, after all, those large specimens you see for sale in inappropriate pot sizes must have had large amounts of root removed.

One of my favourite local shops for plants has just got these rather nice palms in for £19.99......oh the temptation lol , with the leaves tied up they're standing around 5-6ft (not their true height I know but still good sized plants) :)

No where near as hardy as Trachys Bilbo.
Need protection in nine out of ten winters here where I am, if only from the rain.
            Its a desert palm.

Been and had a closer look today, spoke to the guy and he said they are indeed Washy's, he's put a few more out that stand 7-8ft tall with the leaves tied up, the trunk about 3-4ft and quite thick. Still the same price too of £19.99, really good value but if they're going to struggle in our potentially cold winters I'm going to pass on them despite the temptation. I've got to be realistic at the garden I have which is open to cold prevailing westerlies, sadly :)

If only I lived closer I'd give one a bash for £20 but bring it in for the winter
