@mowgley , it looks like it was established in the smaller pot ok.
I'd be more concerned if it had recently been dug up from a field and then potted up, broken roots and all.
Must admit I cant see the point of potting on, when you are about to sell a plant, surely it puts up the carriage price.
But then again maybe they pot on all their plants at the beginning of the season, not knowing when they will sell.
It looks ok to me. if that means anything.:)

Thx @pete that makes me feel better :dbgrtmb:
I thought that too, there were roots encircled around the base of the trunk quite thickly only teased a few out didn't want to snap any off!
Like I said before I've ordered some palm booster to aid root establishment.
Amended the soil loads too. The planting hole had drained this morning after filling it up yesterday. Added loads of homemade compost and 10mm pea gravel to the hole
Only thing is do you think I should stake it?

I dont think its tall enough to stake mowgley.

Getting the holes ready for the butia, brahea and cycad.
Just wished I could dig the hedge out behind but it's not mine

The Conifers or the Laurel (if that is what it is?)

I would have thought a tightly clipped Conifer hedge would make a great backdrop, and provide a very good windbreak. Greedy feeders, but that can be counteracted somewhat and ground will be dry (probably a good thing in Winter).

          Could be worse? :)

P.S. I dug a trench in front of my conifer hedge, severing all roots, and put a root barrier in so that my Exotics didn't have to compete with hedge roots.

I do have a couple of Trachys but nothing huge - this is the largest one - I planted it out last year & it will, hopefully, put a spurt on this year:

There is however a cracking one down the road that I would really like in my garden:

That one flowers every year - maybe when mine grows up it will be something like that.

                They are both in now

                image.jpg

Still undecided where about's to put the cycad
Does it look out of place here?
The pot will be buried it think.

Looks ok there to me mowgley, but then I tend to plant things where I think they will grow best.
Garden planning is not my strong point, in fact its nonexistent.

I reckon it would be better if there was no competing-grass around its base ... and mulch around it instead. Dunno what other folk think though?

Looks fine :) You might be going to cover it, Winter time, if so will it look "unsightly" if in that spot?

I'm the same @pete gardening planning/design not my forte either.
This is the sunniest, driest part of the garden so logic says plant here

Trouble is you can after a number of years end up with a bit of a mish mash of plants all vieing for the best spots.
                      A bit like I have

Potted these trachycarpus waggies today, hopefully in a few years time I can put them in the ground.

See so many very large mature palms in front gardens round here that I'm guessing they were part of the original landscaping when the houses were built. There also used to be large mature cordylines but they all perished in the cold winters a few years ago.
