Christmas approaches. It's my sister's turn to host. Which means I have to bring the pigs in blankets.

I'm thinking I might make them rather than buying ready made.

What do we reckon is cheaper. Buying ready made, or buying small sausages, streaky bacon and cocktail sticks and doing them myself?

    Making yourself would be cheaper

Actually bought a 12 pack to cook and scoff last night from Asda, bought a pack of extra special dry cured bacon to go with but haven't tried that yet, 2 for £4. The pigs in blankets were good but not that good, the bacon was smoked and I'm not a fan of bonfire bacon.

I'd like to have a go at doing my own this year. I suppose they could be as cheap or as expensive as you like. I highly recommend Edwards of Conwy pork chipolatas and their unsmoked back bacon. Used to work on the Tesco meat counter and we'd have a regular "cook off" with them :blue thumb:

I think the ready-made ones are made from cheap Sausage, I use Richmond skinless cooked lightly before wrapping them with bacon. So easy to make and you know what your eating.

I get them from the butchers, he makes them himself and his sausages are amazing. I think they are 20 for £3.

Well there you go - it never occurred to me that they were sold pre-made!

It's just a posh version of part of your standard English breakfast fry up. :noidea: :dbgrtmb: :heehee:

Those are £7.25/Kg, these are £6.70/Kg, come in Christmasy packaging and are on multiltisave at 3 for £5 (mix and match with their other party foods) potentially getting them down to £5.58/Kg.

I was actually looking at these in Tesco earlier this afternoon, lamenting the lack of vegetarian choices amongst their party food selection. And I've found vegetarian pigs in blankets impossible to make remotely edible, as veggie bacon is far too low fat for them to be successful.

Seeing on the amount of pulled pork burgers in Morisson's freezer I guess i'm going with them wrapped in sosmix for xmas lunch :dunno:

Why on earth Linda Mccartney plc would ever imagine vegetarians would want to buy something called pulled pork is totally beyond me

Pulled pork is just a selling ploy, it saves having to cut the meat and doesn't taste any different. The only difference I found was it's pretty dry. I think Tesco's are moving on from pulled this, that and the other now. Looking around Thursday I'm sure I spotted naked burgers, I'll check when I'm next in there. :)

@clueless1 if it wasn't for the fact I hate cooking I'd make my own and have in the past, it's easy enough. I found Tesco's own are very salty, possibly because of the smoked bacon which I never use.

I think if I were taking some as a contribution to a celebration dinner, I would be inclined to make my own with a focus on the quality of components.

I recall one year buying up a tray or three when they were reduced and popping them in the freezer. I used them in Toad in the Hole, adding some finely chopped onion to the batter

I may well make my own. It can't be that difficult.

I'm guessing I need thin sausages, and streaky bacon, and maybe cocktail sticks to secure?

Then I guess I'd part cook the sausages, wrap in streaky bacon, secure with cocktail sticks, and then either roast at mine or take them to my sister. The former probably makes more sense because I imagine my sister's cooker will already be fully engaged.
