There is going to be a change in Cigarette Packaging Next Year.
They will be sold in plain packets with health warning pictures to deter young smokers, gone will be the bright eye catching packets.
Personally I don't think Plain Packaging will deter younger or any other age smoker not to smoke.

Also it will make it easier for the counterfeiters to make these packs as it's a harder job to create the genuine pack today , it will be much easier to manufacture Plain Packs next year.

I had my first cigarette when I was 12 years old, it wasn't from a packet, this was sold in
'The Wee Corner Shop', as a single Cigarette, (on my way to School).:oopss:.

What are your thoughts on this Government Change.

It wasn't anything to do with packaging when I started smoking - I remember buying a 'single and a match' from the ice cream van that used to park at the school gate at lunchtime (secondary school, not that it makes it any better!) - we rarely saw the packets in those days, and in fact the brand of 'single' wasn't ever specified.

I agree with you too that the plain packaging is only going to make it easier for the crooks to make the fakes

Yep, being a survey bod I know how much importance companies put on brands and corporate images, but at the end of the day it doesn't matter at all what somethings packaged in, the main thing is is it any good?

From my point of view this is an earner, as the tobacco companies went mad when the shutters went over the packets so you couldn't see em, get regular surveys where they pay me to answer questions about what i'm smoking, and then pay me to send them all my used packets for the month.

Until its made illegal they should leave smoking alone.

Either they want to stop people smoking or they dont, and basically, they dont, its a tax earner, so they make "noises" to get on the right side of the campaigners.

I guess if they were to make smoking illegal, people would still smoke, but they would lose the tax.

I used to buy singles as well , used to get 20 in a paper bag
As Pete said folk will always smoke , so we may as well get the tax for it . This must be huge as they are £9.70 for a premium brand :hate-shocked:I just wish the EU and UK would stop trying to control or ban everything in our lives .

Listening to R4 about this; in Australia, which has been trying this idea for two years, the counterfeiters are not copying the plain packaging, instead they produce brightly coloured non-branded packs - seems counter-intuitive.

I think they should do the same with drink, people change when they've had a few pints/glasses of wine etc, you don't see that with smoking

Oh, you do when I'm deprived of my cigs, believe me! I'm much nicer with a few glasses of wine inside me than I am when I've tried giving up smoking :heehee:

As someone who has never smoked a cigarette i can safely say i have never seen a packet and thought oooooohhhhh thats looks good well i could try them

The only one that has even come close to that is vogue cigarettes because their packaging is beautiful the rest of the brands aren't.

Although its no where pretty enough to tempt me to smoke baccy.

I really don't see this plan making much of a difference to be honest

I dont smoke now, but I did up until 1994, so its been a while.
                            I smoked from about 13 till 40.
I do remember I actually enjoyed smoking, it was only once the prices started rising, and that I resented propping up the government, that I decided to quit.
It wasn't easy, and even remember 12 months later nearly going back.

I've recently looked at the prices these days and they are extortionate.

I did at one time smoke Hamlet, can you still get them?

Maybe: but behind "closed doors" and in a nondescript packet? :heehee:

I remember my mother smoked Hamlet ... but only on her birthday :noidea:  :noidea:
