Not too much as the pine will take loads of nutrients etc from the soil. Have you considered putting planters underneath instead?

A friend in Eastbourne has a HUGE Lebanon pine in her garden. She grows ivy, bergenia and vinca under it, with great success.

    .

Nothing much usually grows under close planted pine trees, as th e leaves secrete something to limit competition from other foilage!

Have you seen much growing under them in a pine forest?

    Cheers!

You all make good points, I think planters might be the way to go.

This is a row of trees, rather than just one, so from what I can gauge conditions aren't exceptionally dark and dry under there, but probably enough of both to limit anything I might attempt.

Thanks a lot for the feedback guys :thumb:
