Thank you for that Pete. I’ll put them in as late as I can because I’m worried about slugs getting in there. What do you think is the latest date I can do that. I’m on the south coast very warm spot. It usually starts with a drought about now. I would love to be digging them up all winter if that’s possible. V

Main crop will keep all winter if stored correctly. I do leave mine in the ground and dig up as needed. The last few I dug up were a couple of weeks ago. I still have a few more left but they are starting to sprout now so best their best.

You are better off planting maincrop now, they need a long growing season to get good sized. Even if you planted later they will stop growing in September anyway so there is nothing to be gained by delay.

I only grow blight resistant maincrop varieties these days, Maris piper unfortunately isn't so there is a risk you'll lose your harvest as happened last year.

How wonderfully explained John, thank you so much. I now understand the way it works. Next year I would like to know what blight resistant potato you use. V

I've dragged my forced earlies out the greenhouse, these are 'Winston' planted 6 weeks ago, should be ready in a week:

Those look delicious. How do you know if the potatoes under those leaves will have a crop worth digging them out. Or do you go by time in there. V

Going by the time following planting, next week I'll carefully feel around the biggest plant to gauge if they are worth pulling up, technically known as 'furtling' :blue thumb:

I can’t wait to go furling. In about two weeks I think. V

Some early potato varieties will flower, this is often seen by some as a harvesting sign.

After a little furtling, mine are about that size without the large potato you have. I’m waiting for a week as we have just had the heaviest rain fall for ages. It’s looking good. V
P.s. after looking at your potatoes and thinking of a fried egg my mouth is watering.
