    P.P.S. I have heard people say that planting in a bed of rotted manure (or not) influences the flavour too ...

    I know and love Cara (general purpose(baking)), Maris Piper (Nothing beats it for chips), Desiree (best mash on the planet) and King Edward (best roasties ever), the others I've never grown before and I need some "Earlies" ? So thought I'd give them a go

    I have got so fed up in recent years trying to keep the frost off the Earliest that I don't plant outside early any more. We don't eat a lot of spuds, so don't need many, which probably helps, so I just do about 8 large pots (big enough for 4 tubers each) starting NOW! and the earliest I plant outside are relatively late (compared to everyone else) so earthing up is usually enough to keep the frost off, maybe the occasional emergency covering with grass mower clippings and fleece if we get late frosts.

    Just a thought ... but planting outside is easier - apart from the frost-risk.

    Living in London Kristen I seem to have a narrower frost margin than most, I also employ Carol Kleins method of planting spuds, namely, dig a trench a spades depth, plant the tubers and backfill, hopefully by the time foliage appears, all risk of frost has gone, well, it's worked for me in the past but admittedly not with "earlies"... SO.... I'll try planting a few in some bags in the greenhouse and see what fares better :D

    Thanks for the tip about growing undercover early, I'll move them out when I need the room for my salad crop :)
