Today I was helping my dad on his allotment. This time it involved using the sledgehammer to break up some lumps of hardcore. It got me thinking, once again.

Who knows how many thousands of years ago, an ape figured that if it picked up a stone or stick to hit something with, it could achieve much more force than it could with its bare hands. Modern man's ancient ancestor had made that great evolutionary leap, of using tools.

At a later point, who knows how many thousands of years ago, primitive man figured that if you fasten the rock to the stick, you can whack something with terrific force. This paved the way for all manner of technological leaps ultimately setting us apart from all the other animals.

Millenia passed. Over the centuries and millennia, the wheel was invented. A-Frames were devised, and basic geometry was figured out. This enabled early man to achieve great feats of engineering. As each pioneering work brought its own unique challenges, further tools had to be devised to solve the problems. Ultimately man got bored of the land and the sea, and took to the air, and then left the earth altogether. Now, with every school child having a basic understanding of subatomic physics, astronomy, electronics, mathematics, and various engineering principles, we live in an age where we think nothing of speaking to each other via precisely positioned satellites travelling thousands of miles per hour in a very precise orbit hundred of miles above our heads. Yet still, one of our most versatile and useful tools is still the hammer in one of its many forms. And how far has the hammer evolved since a primitive ape like creature first tied a rock to a stick? It is a glorified rock, fastened to a stick.

Same thing. Rock tied to a stick to make it better for hitting things with. Could you kick a golf ball as precisely or as far as you can launch it with a golf bat?
