We had a cupboard exactly like that, on the north corner of the house. It only developed into a problem when we replaced all our old metal windows with modern double glazing. It was obviously lack of ventilation. That bedroom had an open vent which had been blocked when we had cavity wall insulation. I replaced the old fashioned clay air brick with an expelairre ventilation unit, it has a heat exchanger so uses the heat from the outgoing air to warm up incoming dry air. It has a small fan which makes hardly any noise. Along with anti mould paint it solved our problem. I know you probably aren't allowed to make holes in your rental property and the unit wasn't cheap either so maybe not a solution for you.

Aye, that would be a bridge too far for us @JWK - in fairness, it was chock full of stuff that should have been launched in the bin years ago, and has been like that since we moved in ten years ago, so it is no wonder that it was rough. Mould treatment done, first coat on - not being dainty with it (not least because a shed/fence brush is the only one I could find) and just waiting for it to dry before I slap on another.

We tried one but they are too noisy for a bedroom.

Well, it is done - painted and filled back up with 'stuff' albeit a lot less stuff than there previously was so there is a lot more space for air to flow - this is it in the process of being filled. This will do to get us through this winter then I can take a look at it properly again in the summer, with a view to adding ventilation - I am tempted to add covered vent holes near the bottom of the doors and then add a vent into the ceiling of the cupboard (again, just a covered hole really) into the loft - - that should draw warm air out of the room in toward the loft... I think..

Due to increased insulation thicknesses in roof spaces, making them colder, moist air should not be vented into them. Plasterboard ceilings at first floor level now incorporate a vapour barrier, and roof spaces are ventilated both at the eaves and in the roof slopes. This is to prevent moist air in a cold roof space causing condensation, damp and rot.

If you've got a growbox in a spare bedroom with plants being watered daily, a dehumidifier is great.
