Is there a way of pruning old woody plants to bring back their former beauty?

My thought is to cut them down to the ground, leaving just one branch!

I do cut mine right back (not to the ground, but to about 8") and they grow back well. They look absolutely AWFUL for a while though.

Edited to add: am going to do mine today / tomorrow... maybe!
