Pruning cherry trees-help please!

Hi there,
I would like to hard prune these two trees,but I’m unsure how far back to cut them.
Any help would be appreciated

Hi, you are best waiting until the summer to prune cherries but tbh, those are weeping cherries with very little growth on them, so I don't know why you'd wish to prune them. If you must you need to only cut the weeping parts or you will lose the shape.

The trees don’t seem to be growing very well and I thought a hard prune would encourage new growth
So I’ll just leave them for now ?

 

I would leave them but it depends on how long they have been there. They can take a few years to settle and then grow strongly. I see in the first picture that there are branches that have been cut off at the trunk and for these weeping trees it's these that you need. We have one and they never become as dense as normal cherries, you get less branches so they look more open. I'd be inclined to just leave them for a while but perhaps other have different experiences that can help.

 

I wouldn’t prune them. To encourage more growth you could create a clear area around the base of each tree and enrich it with some organic matter such as farmyard manure, stable manure or soil conditioner. You could also add a few handfuls of blood, fish and bone. Keep the trees well watered during dry spells.
